What's wrong with me????!!!!

by KK_Wood, Sep 12, 2008 07:51PM
I have been having chronic migraines for over 2 years now.  I first went in for a MRI in the end of 2006 and they didn't find any tumors like they expected. I have a steady headache every day...don't ever notice it going away. I have just gotten used to it. Every now and then, I will get a bad migraine....maybe a couple times a week.  I keep a regular diet..used to play sports and try to stay active. I used to get a sharp pounding in the left side of my head when I first started noticing these migraines.  It would last for about 30 seconds then be gone. Back then it would come back every few minutes. Now I get them only ever so often...and after I usually have a steady pounding in the front of my head. Lately, I have been having a sharp pain that runs like a knife diagonally from the top of my head down to my left side. The first time I had this, it lasted a few seconds and was gone but I then had a strong thumping through out my head the rest of the evening. Last night, it occured again but lasted @ least 2 min. I am usually tired all the time but find it hard to fall asleep before midnite and wake @ hours like 3 and 4 just randomly without a headache @ all. The only times I seem to not notice the headaches as much are when I sleep less than 4 hours @ night.  Any longer and I wake up with them. I am currently taking 120 mg. of Inderal every day and Imitrex when needed...I just want to know what it is...electrical sumthing? blood disorder? what??? Headaches are a second nature for me now but I still know its not normal.....

Hi,

How are you?
It is possible that the sharp stabbing headaches are ice pick headaches. Ice pick headaches are very common in patients with migraine. These headaches are quite terrifying. They occur in about 40% patients suffering from migraine. These however do not always occur with migraine; they can come on their own. Usually by the time treatment is taken they are usually gone.
Indomethacin has been found useful in preventing ice pick headaches. Since you suffer from chronic headaches I would suggest you to try alternate treatment like biofeedback, acupressure and magnesium supplements.
