subcortical white matter

by trishi, Aug 01, 2008 10:48PM
I recently had an MRI and it showed nonspecific subcortical matter changes with significant desease of the pons suggesting vessel vasculopathy and said I neede further testing.I went to a neurologist today and he ordered a MRA and various blood word and tried explaining that this was due to a history of hypertension and high blood pressure for which I have been on medication to control. Was the damage to the vavsular part of this due to having the hypertension and high cholestrol before taking the medication.? I didn''t quite understand him today. I believe he said the MRA was to check the blood flow and circulation in and around the brain. Is this true? He prescribed Midrin for migraines and Indocin to help prevent the "lighning" headaches I have been having also. Do you think he is on the right course. I was concerned because my brother had just gotten diagnosed with Parkinsons last year and read where you can have some of the same symtons for it. Please advise if this is the right course of action and what they do if they find a blood vessel or vascular problem. thanks

Hi,

How are you?
Yes an MRA will measure the blood flow in and around the brain and will help to diagnose if there is a blockade present.
High BP and high cholesterol are risk factors for stroke which occurs due to blockade of cerebral blood vessels. Since you have both the risk factors it is important to rule out vascular causes of the white matter changes.
If they find a blockade you will be put on anti platelet medications and advised to keep your BP and blood cholesterol within normal limits. Hope this helps!
