1st Ultrasound showed fetus, 2nd fetus had disappeared

I am 5 weeks pregnant, and went in for an ultrasound and they found the fetus. I was scheduled for a 2nd ultrasound a few days later because I had been cramping a lot, but did not have any bleeding.

When I went in for my 2nd ultrasound they could not find the fetus. I had both an abdominal and vaginal ultrasound and both showed nothing.

Has anyone else experience this before?

They saw nothing in the 2nd ultrasound at all, whereas my first ultrasound there was a very visible 'black spot'. I had the first done on Thursday, and that night had cramping in my entire body, it actually woke me up in the middle of the night. The cramping stopped, and I did not have discharge.

I had the 2nd on Saturday and that's when they couldn't find anything. I had bleeding a few hours later, bright red, followed by 2 days of brown discharge. I am still having mild period like cramping which I read is normal along with the brown discharge.

My Dr. suggested scheduling a DNC, and I am not sure what to do at this point.

My guess was that the embryo was reabsorbed by the body, but it seems quite fast for that to happen if the time difference was only a few days.

It sounds strange but 5 weeks is really early for them to see the actual fetus.  It is possible to miscarry that early and for everything to reabsorb back into your body - but I would wait another 2 weeks and have another U/S to confirm if it's viable.  Early pregnancy can play a lot of tricks, and nature can be very cruel.  Hopefully they missed it and your bean was just hiding!  Did they see a gestational sac in the 2nd U/S?
