A Few Questions about Miscarriage and D/C

On 6/15 I had my first ultrasound for my baby. I just barely got done saying, "Please give me lots of pictures for daddy." When I looked up on the screen and didn't see a baby. I saw just a fetal pole in the sac. My measurements were only saying 6 weeks and 6 days. However, I was charting, taking my temp, using ovulation tests, the works. So I knew when my LMP was which was 3/16. I was supposed to be exactly 13 weeks. My doctor told me that she was pretty sure I was going to miscarry. I was devestated and still am. I never thought I wasn't going to see a baby on that screen. So today which is 6/18 I have officially started to bleed light pink. The baby definitley stopped growing and now my body is miscarrying. With that being said I am going to the docs on in two days where we are discussing a D & C.

So I am wondering first if the doc will give me a D & C if I have already started bleeding? I really want this as it will make sure everything is expelled and that I don't have to go through the pain of bleeding and cramping at home. And the biggest part if I pass the baby. This is something I don't want to see.

Also if I do have the D & C, when would it be alright to have sex? I am not worried really about how long I have to wait as long as I don't ovulate. I would like to TTC again right away. Thinking your prego for over 3 months and then having that ripped away is a hard pill to swallow. I want a baby so bad. So I am going to start charting immediately that way I can watch my body. I am assuming when I ovulate which could be anywhere from 2 weeks after to 6 weeks after it would be okay to have intercourse. What do you think? I mean if I ovulate that means that my HcG levels are below 5 and that I'm not bleeding anymore. I just don't want to get an infection after the procedure and have to wait longer to TTC. So I am thinking that if I ovulate then my body should be ready...wasn't sure if this sounded crazy?

Sorry such a long post and more than one question, but my doc isn't that great. She makes the right decisions, but doesn't explain things well. So I will definitely be switching OB's....Thanks for your help...

Thanks so much for sharing your experience with me and everyone. Thank you to everyone. In my head I keep telling myself that if I am lucky enough to ovulate just 2 weeks after my D&C that that means my body will be ready to go and that everything is fine. However, in my heart I also know that it would be best to be completely sure by at least waiting until my first AF goes by. Honestly I just don't know if I can handle waiting that long. But it would also be so rough if I had another m/c because I didn't just wait. I guess the only thing I can do is to hear my doc out and watch my body. I mean if I stop bleeding within a few days and maybe a few weeks later ovulate and pains and cramping stop maybe that would be okay...

I know that when my doc mentioned the D&C that she would use the suction method by sucking everything out instead of scraping. So I'm wondering if my uterine lining wouldn't be really thin or would it? Because from everything I've read it seems like many women do get preg right off before first AF and everything is fine, but it seems like the ones that don't turn out fine might be because the lining wasn't thick enough? I could be way off but trying to figure things out now before everything happens...

I'm so sorry for your loss, the same thing happened to me in January.  I had a D&C on the 25th Jan.  I was advised not to have intercourse for 2 weeks to avoid infection but I was also advised not to have unprotected intercourse until I'd had my first af in order to be able to date the new pregnancy accurately.  From my own personal experience I would say it is best to wait until after your first AF.  I didn't and spent weeks and weeks thinking I might be pregnant and taking numerous hpt's and it was horrible.  Every woman is different when it comes to a D&C, some women have their cycle return quickly and others don't.

As you have already started bleeding then it is worth giving your Dr a ring but I expect they will still want to do the D&C to make sure everything has gone.

I am so sorry for your loss.  I was 14 weeks when I miscarried and I didn't know anything was wrong until I started bleed at 14 weeks and my son came out the next night as a miniature baby with hands, feet everything.  My son was between 10 and 11 weeks when he stopped growing and he was about the size of my finger.  I think if your baby stopped growing at 6 weeks you may only see bleeding or as I have been told a grey type of clot.  I asked my doc when we could ttc again and she said whenever you want.  I think they just say to wait a few cycle to get an accurate date.

I miscarried everything naturally.  It was pretty much a normal labour minus the pain with my waters breaking, placenta and baby out after that.  I had no complications what so ever and the bleeding after my son came out was just like a heavy period.  I must say the bleeding about 3 hours before he was born sleeping was like a tap being turned on - very, very heavy.

Miscarrying at 14 weeks I ovulated at 3 weeks post miscarriage and I got my first af at 5 and a half weeks post miscarriage.  It  was kind of like a normal af.  I got my hcg levels checked at 4 weeks post miscarriage and they were at 2.  I also took a hpt and got a bfn 3 weeks after miscarriage so that was promising.  I must say I did BD with my hubby about a week after not to conceive but because I wanted to get my life back.  We didn't conceive before my first cycle but I am pretty sure we are pregnant again, 2 months after my miscarriage - so it can happen.

I hope that helped you plan everything and look forward to hearing some good news soon.

Yea that is a good thing I got pregnant after about two months of not using protection so I hope I get the same luck when I start ttc and they usually say wait 1-3 cycles before ttc again so I'm gonna wait three cycles because I cant go through seeing my baby dead on the ultrasound and there's nothing i can do so I know how you feel I took much comfort in knowing this happened to A LOT of people I know with their first and they went on to have many children was this your first pregnant?

Thanks so much for taking the time to read and respond. I know I almost wrote a book! Everything that you are saying I have had thoughts about. I just assume that if you ovulate then your body should ready since you its not possible to ovulate unless your hcg levels are below 0. That should also mean no bleeding. So I know that every woman is different, but it gives me hope that 2 weeks after the DC I could O and get preg again. They say you are most fertile for the first three months. I got preg this time our very first cycle TTC. So the doc tried to encourage me by explaining I got preg first cycle TTC and that doesnt happen everyday and that I have a much higher chance get preg first cycle after a miscarriage. So I am very hopeful.

I am so sorry that you went through the same thing. Its just horrifying...I couldn't believe what I saw on the ultrasound...never thought it would happen to me I guess.Good luck to you too!
