D&C worries

Hi Ladies, I'm 15 weeks "pregnant", however my baby has been dead inside me since about 8 weeks and I had no clue. I have a D&C on Friday... Question, those of you who have had a D&C, are you in a lot of pain afterwards? Heavy bleeding? Did anyone have complications due to the procedure? Did it take you a long time to concieve (conceive) again? I'm so terrified:{

First pregnancy ended in a miscarriage at 17 weeks.  I had my D&C on December 23...Great Christmas present right?!?  The D&C was a very simple procedure.  Be sure to ask them to do an autopsy if it is offered.  I want to know what happened and I am sure you would want to too.  I bled for about 10 but not heavy at all.  Lay around and relax as much as possible that first week.  No work!  The bleeding tapered off at about 5 days and was very light...I didnt have any pain other than a bit uncomfortable the first day or two but nothing like cramps of a period.  The only time I bled heavy was about 11 days after the D&C but it was my fault....I thought I was perfectly healed so I started cleaning, running the vacuum, picking up my sister's kids, etc. The next day bleeding heavy...I mean running down my leg heavy.  THe first day I went back to work I bled heavy too...I am a teacher so I am on my feet a long time.  Then on day 14 it just stopped.  I havent had any bleeding since.  I insisted on an internal ultrasound which I had on Monday to ensure they got it all and I was healing.  Everything looks good, so with that said...The procedure is not physically painful but there are still emotional scars of course.

I had a m/c in March 09 and had my d&c on Mar. 3rd and it was a little painful afterwards, I bled like a period for 7 days then lightly for about 3 more days. then i stopped completely. I layed around also for a few more days! Like need_answers_from_someone said the procedure is not so much physically painful, but more emotional. I conceived again 4 months later but unfortunately i miscarried again! i wish u all the best, and i am sorry for your loss. ((hugs))

I had my m/c after 6 weeks of pregnancy.   I just had a D&C this past wednesday so about 1week ago.  After it was done I had no bleeding at all.  The last two days had very little spotting  just for like a panty liner.  I am an IVF girl & was told I have to wait 2 cycles before trying again.   Good Luck to you.
I am so sorry you lost your baby & we have to go thru this.........It really SU***!!!!

I'm so sorry for your loss!  The D&C for me wasn't bad at all, I had a breathing tube because they put me out for it and pain from it being in was the only thing I felt (Ice cream helped with that!).  I bleed for 12-24 hours, then had at least a week of nothing, then bleed for about a week (felt like a period for me).  I had the D&C done at 11 1/2 weeks, the baby stopped at 6 1/2 weeks.  30 days after I got my actual AF and it was a pretty normal cycle for me.

Ask if there going to check your levels or if they will do an ultrasound to see if they got everything out.  They didn't do either with me (although had I known about it I would have at least asked).

I hope everything goes well for you!

Thanks Ladies for your stories, It helps to know someone else has gone thru this. I'll try to rest and since I'm a waitress, I'll take it easy. I'm not gonna go back to work until Dr says (and if I feel ok) Like you girls mentioned, the emotional pain is the hardest thing about loosing an angel.

I lost my baby in July 09 at 12 weeks, baby grew to 8w3d. I had to have the d&c done, because my body wasn't registering that I had lost the baby.
I had really bad cramping afterwards for about a week, so much that I almost went back to the hospital and asked about it. As for bleeding, it was only a bit of spotting for about a week or so for me. I got my first AF just shy of 5 weeks after the d&c. I have endometriosis, so that could have been the cause for the cramping. It has been even worse since the loss of the baby.
As of yet, I still haven't hit the jackpot, but a lot of people do get pregnant again right away. I guess it depends on when your body decides your ready. As everyone else has been mentioning, the emotional roller coaster ride afterwards is a tough one, and i found most of the people I know don't really understand what I've been through. I guess it doesn't help that most of the people I know are having babies of their own or just gave birth. After finding this site about a month ago, I have come a long way towards healing my wounds, as I finally found people to talk to that can understand the pain, and are willing to listen. I hope things go ok for you.

Thank you ladies. It really helps to know you guys have all been thru it and understand the emotions behind a loss like this. Well, I had the D&C today and I was put under general anesthesia and I woke up crampy. I got vicodin and that helps. I'm bleeding pretty heavy with small clots, but I know it's normal. Now I can finally begin to recover both physically and emotionally. Again, thanks for your replies and support. Good Luck to you all with your plans:}

Hi babies and everyone else, I too am sorry for all the lost potential. But as much as everyone tells us it is common etc. it is still so hard to bear. For me, I never wanted children. But this pregnancy came at a time in my life which seemed perfect. I hadn't wasted any of my youth raising kids, I had done a lot of the amazing things with my life I wanted to do, i had also survived horrific trauma and I thought this would be good for us. My husband was reluctant but willing because it was an 'accident' I never dreamed my fetus wold die. In fact I still dream i am pregnant. My husband does not want to try again. This is hard. I am even considering starting over with a new man because I want that chance. I have a lot of wonderful traits and insight that I want to pass on genetically if possible. This "accidental" pregnancy awoke that in me. I started bleeding around Christmas but they tell you "oh lots of women bleed throuogh pregnancy" but I knew something was wrong. I had to wait for my booked ultrasound, january 5th. the tech just said "it's only 9 weeks so I can't do the procedure" we thought I was further along. She never saaid there was no heartbeat. It was 2 days before I found out. I thought it was still there. Never dreamed it wasn't alive. What a roller coaster into hell and back this has been.  Finally got an appt. with a gyn, I didn't know her and she really was cruel in my opinion for prescribing misoprostol. Please women, NEVER take this horrible medication. the pain and agony are indescribable. Like being stabbed over and over in a place no woman should have to feel such pain. iended up going to the hospital via ambulance and all the time terrified they wouldn't help me. The fetus never passed. I was in hospital for 15 hours before I got a D&C. The one shining moment though was how kind, loving, gentle and caring the hospital staff were to me. The intake nurse was sadly, very familiar with this drug and was immediately stroking, soothing and getting me morphine. MORPHINE! I mean i was stunned, if pain requires morphine that is the most extreme pain one can ever experience.  I immediately felt better after the D&C and the kind doctors explained every bit of the surgery, I was out for about 5 minutes and ready to go home within the hour. I have felt better all week but tonight I feel very weak and shaky, achy and passing clots too. It could be I over excercised today as well. Hoping to feel better tomorrow. orry to go on so long and I don't expect it all to be read, but it helps to write it all out. Wishing all my Sisters of Gaia peace, love, health and happiness.
