How long spotting after miscarriage

Hello,

I was diagnosed with "missed miscarriage" Oct. 6 and finally naturally miscarried Oct. 30th.  After a few days of heavy bleeding, I still have some 'watery' like bleeding / discharge? (very light 'tan' color) which is lessening by the day.  Did anyone else have this ? How long did your bleeding last?   Also, I had irregular periods ( 39 to 52 days)  before I got pregnant - want to know if those of you with irregular periods - resumed your pattern after m/c  or if it changed to more regular after a m/c ?  Thanks !

Hello Everyone, I had an u/s on Nov 7th b/c I was spotting and found out that the embryo looked like it was 6 weeks and I was supposed to be 11 weeks. I had to wait until the 10th to talk to my OBGYN and she said she wanted me to get another u/s to confirm and two sets of blood work to check hcg levels. I knew my conception date and was very frustrated by making me wait a whole week without doing something. I was sad and felt like I had wasted time by having my dead baby inside me unknowingly for 5 weeks. I finally ended up having a d and c on the 13th (only 6 days later), but it felt like a year to me.
I have been having some bleeding on and off ever since and it is heavier when I laugh, sneeze or have a bowel movement. I guess its the strain, but I would like it to end b/c my hubby and I want to ttc as soon as I get my first AF. How long do you think it will last? My Dr did not give me a follow up u/s or blood work, but we do meet in the first week of January, but I'm hoping to start trying before then if I ever stop bleeding.
I'm feel like this has been a very bad dream and I it's so sad to read all of your stories, but also very helpful in coming to terms with our loss. Everyone seems so open minded and hlepful, its nice to see.

I agree more with the "A Flood" idea...lol After my m/c I didn't have my levels monitored or an u/s. The u/s is to see if you retained any tissue. My baby came out with the placenta and cord all at once while the dr. was doing the exam so I didn't have to worry about that. If you get a BFN on a HPT it is a pretty good indication that your levels are down if you don't want to go to the dr.
Don't worry about the long posts...That's what we are here for. I hope you get AF soon so you will have a starting place to ttc!

Hi Everyone,

I figure that if i don't have infection symptoms ( fever, continued pain & bleeding and foul discharge ),  that everything had cleared out.  I've been taking my temp daily and its back down to 96.4. Thought I'd wait to take a HPT to see if hcg down. Is that  a good indication? Would an infection still pop up after all this time ?

What standard tests did everyone get after m/c ? Are they the same whether you had a natural or d&c ?  ie:  I've noticed people mentioning getting blood tests to follow hcg levels. Is the u/s to check it all is clear a vaginal u/s ? Hmmm, I'm feeling now I have been left hanging...thanks for all your info - good to know .

Now that I'm aware that pcos causes irregular periods - will check if thats what I have. Never checked it out after first gyno shrugged it off.

60 days sounds sooooo far off.....I'm going to look forward to actually getting AF so I know when to start !   Man, I feel like a blabber mouth - my posts run on so long !

Just a few more thoughts for you... I'd suggest pushing your way in to see a doctor sooner rather than later to confirm that the m/c is complete.  You could try your family doctor or a walk-in clinic to see if they can expedite a referral to a facility with an u/s machine.  No point having more things to worry about and you don't want to risk an infection.

My Naturopath explained that it takes 90 days for the ovum to develop from the time it is selected until it ovulates so she recommended waiting that long to develop a healthier egg.  My RE (Reproductive Endocrinologist aka fertility specialist) told me I only had to wait one cycle.  I took the middle road -- since my cycles were long I waited 60 days and the first try didn't work so we're on our second month now.

During those 60 days, I exercised like crazy starting about a week after the bleeding stopped.

Thanks for the acronym list - my husband and I were trying to figure out the AF - I figured it had to do something with period - thought maybe "A flood " lol...He chuckled at reading the BD ....I can see him abusing the use of that in the future.....lol

I had found a female gynocologist before I found out I was pregnant. The first thing she did when she came into the room was give me a pap smear pamphlet and tell me the two prices and how accurate the tests would be.  Then she told me to undress and rushed out the room to tend to another patient/ client.  She went back and forth each exam room.  I decided not to go back to her even though I had wanted a female gyno.

This second doctor , I called the hospital that I'd like to give birth at and got an appt. with him.  You have to know I 've never had any male doctors - except once when we were kids went to a different pediatrician and he helped my sisters and I take off our tops....we were creeped out.
This ob/gyn was a listener - he didn't rush us out and sat and heard all my concerns before the u/s. He was also really kind when he told us about the blighted ovum and since I was trying not to crack after the news - I didn't get a chance to ask more questions.  I don't think I can blame him - more the medical system.  I'm in Montreal, Canada and am not surprised at the long waits (2 - 3 hours) but, I had a good feeling about our doctor.  ( unlike the second doctor who prescribed the 20 painkillers and 3 cytotec - he rushed us out and gave vague answers ).  I figure its up to me to take charge and get the answers I want.
Its difficult to get an appointment with the popular doctors - there's a website - where you can rate your doctor - I tried to get appts but they're not taking new patients at the moment.  I am hoping by the time I get pregnant again - one of my top 5 will let me in  ( again - would prefer to get a female - a good doctor - who works at a clinic and affiliated with my hospital of choice ).  The guy dr I had was nice but the hospital waits are incredible.  My sister in law waits 1 - 1.5 hrs only at her appts.  I will keep this guy ob I had though in case  I can't get in.  We both felt comfortable with him.

Oop, got to go and leave for work - talk to you all soon !  Thanks for your tips !

Sue, you will find that varies dramatically between women and how long they wait.  It also depends on their dr's advice, natural m/c or D&C, and just how they feel.  I had a natural m/c at 9 weeks.  First dr said to wait two cycles, then one.  We had protected sex from m/c to first AF following, then started to TTC again.  Well now it's been 3 months and still no BFP.  As far as working out again, I wouldn't see why not?  Is there any option for you to go to a different dr?  It doesn't sound like yours is being very supportive and that's so important at this time!!

IMHO, I think it's best to wait at the very least one cycle.  One of the reasons dr's don't want you to get pg right away again, as it makes it difficult to date the pg, 'cause you won't know when you O'd (ovulated).

Even though you are going to wait, you can still feel free to join our cycle buddies thread.  The more the merrier and it's just a good excuse for us to be chatty :)

Steph covered most, but here are a few more:
O - ovulation
OPK - Ovulation predicition Kit
HPT - home preg test
POAS - pee on a stick (you'll see this alot!!)
SSBD - super sticky baby dust

My dr. put me on antibiotics due to the fact that I had a missed m/c. I was 9w3d when I m/c and my baby had died at 5 weeks. I would check into that. I know it made me feel better to know I wasn't going to get an infection. One less thing to worry about. Some ladies get pregnant weeks after their m/c some take a long time.
Come check out the CB thread the title is Cycle Buddies week of 11/17, it should be one of the first posts on here. You can also go back and read Cycle Buddies #3 if you want. There are a couple more that go pretty far back. Feel free to snoop around and get to know it if you want. We'd love to have you. We have a pretty good group of women.

About the abbreviations, there is a link when you are on the forum page to the right that says Common pregnancy related accronyms and abbreviations. That has all of them. Here are some of the most common ones we use on here.
AF- Aunt Flo, period
PCOS- polycystic ovary syndrome
BD- baby dance, sex
NECOT- never ending cycle of torture (Thanks Bam and Dani)
CD- cycle day
DPO- days past ovulation
BFN- big fat negative
BFP- big fat positive

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all your well wishes and sharing your stories. I feel like I have friends out there who understand .... really comforting.
These past two days no spotting - hope that means all is clear....I don't know if I'm paranoid but, sometimes I think I feel an occasional light cramp ( leftish lower abdomen ). Is this real or am I imagining it ?  Maybe I am paranoid about getting an infection. I had called the nurse to ask to be followed up by my doctor and she said to call back in 3 months to make an appointment.  Three months ?!!!  I'm hoping to start ttc by then.  I feel like I've been left hanging - the last time I saw my doctor was when he diagnosed the blighted ovum (oct 6th ).  I went back a week later for the ultrasound ( to make sure everything was not left behind ) - was a total waste of 3 hours since I knew it hadn't happened yet. And seeing all these really pregnant ladies and some kids in the waiting room didn't help either.  Another doctor on duty gave me a prescription for 3 cytotec and 20 painkillers. Instead,  I waited it out and had a natural miscarriage.  I am still going to make an appointment soon ( waiting a week to take a home pregnancy test)  and will be armed with a list of questions to ask my doctor so I can get rid of this nagging feeling. He had said to wait 2 periods as 1 month would not be enough and I'd most likely mc again.  My periods are long though so I really hope I won't have to wait too long to try again. In the meanwhile, is it safe to start working out again ? I gained some weight chowing down pre-m/c. Got to get rid of that pooch....

Yogachick  - thanks for the book suggestion - will check it out.  Um, I can't figure out some of these acronyms I've been seeing. What is AF and ( gulp ) PCOS ?  My first doctor could never figure out why my periods were long so I just lived with it after all these years ( except when I went on the pill for 7 years and cannot remember when they became irregular again) .

Steph9803  - yes definitely want to ttc again - just waiting now to heal and for 2 cycles to pass first.  I've read its recommended to wait 2 to 3 months but, we're on an "accelerated" plan because of my age. ( How long did everyone wait to ttc between pregnancies ?)   Is there a link to the cycle buddies thread you mentioned ? Would like to check it out. I'm new to this forum / community thing.  First time checked out forums while waiting for the mc - and posted after.

thanks again all !

I'm glad you found us too...Having the support of ladies who know what you are feeling is just so wonderful. The pain will soon begin to get easier I promise. You will always remember your angel, but the pain will start to fade. You have to grieve in whatever way makes you feel better. I don't know what I would have done with out the support I have found on here. Just know that we are all here for you. Are you going to ttc again? If so you should come over to our cycle buddies thread. We have some of us that have been trying for months and some of us that are waiting for their first AF after m/c. At least stop by and check it out. I know it's a good outlet for a lot of us...

I am so sorry you had to go through that... it's not something you'd wish for anyone.  I m/c around 7/8 weeks... we saw the heartbeat & the MD put me on bed rest but it wasn't enough.  After my MD confirmed that everything had detached & cleared-out, I spotted for about a week.  Then it took about 8 weeks for my first period (my cycles are long too)... my MD could have started it back up sooner but I needed the time to recover (I exercised A LOT--- endorphins!) .   I'm not a doctor but I should mention that people with PCOS tend to have long cycles & are more likely to m/c -- I wish someone had brought this to my attention sooner b/c that's my challenge & I had no idea... it may be worth looking into PCOS so you can get some more proactive medical help for the next time.  One last thing... I found the book Trying Again by Douglas and Sussman helpful.  Hang in there...

I am sorry for your loss :( I bled for about 3 weeks total, in the beginning it was just spotting, then I had the miscarriage and continued to bleed for a little bit. I never had major bleeding fortunatly. I do not have regular periods and I had been on clomid so that I could ovulate, and I was hoping the miscarriage would restart my system but I ended up having to to Prometrium to induce a period. I don't know if I will ovulate on my own, but I had one more cycle of clomid and I decided to take it again to up my chances! Good luck to you!

Thank you girls for your reply.  I'm so glad I found this forum - I have only told 2 family members and swore them to keep it a secret.  I just don't feel like sharing this to my (two) large families and friends at this moment and discovering this forum with others who have shared the same loss helps me feel less alone.  I guess I don't want to hear comments, tips etc... that will just hurt.  We have to force a smile on our faces when people ask "Do you have kids ?", " Do you want kids ?", " When are you going to have kids?", or "So....anything happening ?" ( just to name a few) and laugh it off the ache.  This would've been our first and after months of disappointment every month when I'd get my period, I really thought I got lucky this time.  At first I was afraid to be happy  - then I started dreaming about how great this Christmas was going to be and that I'd be a mother by mother's day. I even started searching for names and mentally decorating the baby's room......Ooh, sorry, didn't mean to wallow in self-pity.
I think the body is on the mend now - haven't spotted the past two days and basal temp back down.  Just the heart needs to mend (How long does it take to get over this emotionally ?)

I wish you all lots of luck as well - may we all share happy birth stories soon and a supersized-generous dousing of baby dust on you all !

I'm sorry for your loss. I also had a missed m/c back in August. I only bled for about a week after. My cycles have always been a little irregular due to the fact that I have cysts, fibroids, and endometriosis. My cycles since the m/c have been exactly 34 days apart though. I wish you the best of luck!

I'm so sorry for your loss. When I had my early m/c (5 weeks) I bled for about 7-8 days, mostly spotting like yours towards the end. I also had very irregular periods before I had my daughter ( usually 2 a year - was told I prob. would never get preg.) and after my m/c I waited 14 weeks before AF came back, which just happened. Hopefully I will not go back to only 2 a year, as am ttc again, but only time will tell. I hope your cycles become more regulated after your body heals from the loss.

I'm sorry for your loss. I didn't have irregular periods. I wish I could help you more. The women on here are great so I'm sure someone has shared a similiar experience. Best of luck to you and a quick recovery......
