Is this a missed miscarriage - should I have any hope at all??

Just a little background. I have two healthy boys, ages 3.5 and 21 months. We've been trying for 15 months for a third baby. I got pregnant and had a miscarriage in June '10. That miscarriage seems pretty typical for onset, duration and recovery. It happened at 6w4d.

We started trying immediately again and I got my BFP on 10/16. My LMP was 9/22 so I found out at 3w3d that I was pregnant and it was a VERY dark BFP. It was twice as dark as the control line. No issues or problems until 10/28 (Thursday) when I started spotting red. I called the Dr. and they drew an Hcg (got the results the next day and it was 1776). I spotted all that day and after taking a short walk in the evening I had some clots. I thought that was it and I was losing the baby.

On Friday I continued to spot, but it seemed to slow down a litte, but still had some clots. I decided to take it easy all weekend so Sat & Sun i didn't do much but lay on the couch and try not to move around too much (did not lift the kids or anything strenuous). The spotting slowed down dramatically and by Sunday night stopped completely. My last clot was Saturday morning.

On Monday I started spotting brown and that has continued to today (Thursday) although that it's been getting increasinginly lighter and sometimes I'm not sure if I have any or just a little tinge when I wipe. This past Monday I had another Hcg drawn and it was 1529. I went into my Dr. on Tuesday and they did an ultrasound. At that point I would be 5w6d. The Dr. saw a small blob on the screen and said that that is the "pregnancy" but didn't take any measurements and it didn't look like much at all to me. He didn't let me really see it for very long so I'm not sure if there was a sac or not.

He sent me home to wait for the miscarriage to happen and if it doesn't to go back for another ultrasound in 2.5 weeks (likely for a D&C). My breasts have been VERY sore the past couple of days and the discomfort seems to be increasing, not diminishing, but my pregnancy acne is going away. I'm so afraid to get my hopes up. Could it be a vanishing twin? I asked my Dr. and he said 'no' as the Hcg reading from last week (the 1779) would've been higher. He said that he doesn't want to check any more lab values and just see me for the next ultrasound. He was sure that I'm going to miscarry since my numbers went down. I've read stories about other ladies where the #'s dropped and then went back up and they had a viable pregnancy. What is going on with me??

Im really sorry that you have to experience this. At least there is some peace when its a clear miscarriage. obviously you would have expected your HCG to go up between the two dates in a normal pregnancy.  But nothing is ever normal.  You didnt pass everything if you have a blob, its too bad he wasnt more clear about the ultrasound at that point.  You would not expect to see much more at 5 weeks so.  If you are having a miscarraige your numbers should keep dropping, its too bad your doctor is unwilling to take more tests at this point ..

Ill never forget looking at the US monitor and my husband asking the technician if she could point out the baby because we didnt see one.. and she saying its not my job to interupt the results, ill get the doctor.. and walking out.....  =(
