Methergine

Quick question, I was prescribed Methergine the day I started to m/c. I thought that the medication was supposed to stop bleeding and stop uteran contractions. The doc gave me that and sent me home to see how the weekend went. Does this sound normal? I ended up in the hospital the following night with a blood clot the size of a softball and an emergency D&C. I was so devestated about the m/c that I am just starting to look into it now. Thanks for the feedback.

It was the CHIEFof ob/gyn at the hospital which is what concerns me. I thought they were supposed to be experts. I will let everyone know how my appt goes tomorrow. Thanks for the support on this one. I just want a BFP.

Nicole - was this a general practioner or OB/GYN.  If a GP, possibly (but not really) maybe a mistake.  If an OB/GYN - NO WAY!  And it should be brought to somebodies attention - even if you are anonymous.  It could save a life.  Best of luck on your appt tomorrow.  Make sure to let us know how it goes.

Thanks Jenny, I would rather focus on a BFP than what I could get out of a horrible situation. So I will do exacly what you said and hope that this is the month. It's horrible what the doc's miss or misdiagnos, and being in the business, I know it happens more that most people think (unfortunately). These days docs have lost their bedside manner and think only of the problem not the person. I hope that everyone has a doc they can trust and rely on because without them where would we all be?

Nicole-
I really think that since you work closely to this dr that did that you should talk to them and maybe with your dh too. The dr needs it brought to their attention. I mean you don't have to go nuts but they could have caused your body alot of problems on top of already having a miscarriage. I really think you should address the issue so maybe they will think before doing this to someone else. I had a situation with my high risk dr and it was my obgyn that reffered me over. As soon as the new dr calls me with the day this wk I'm calling my original ob and letting him know my concerns. These dr's neglegent or not need to be aware of any chaos. I'm glad you have the green light. Have fun and I wish you a bfp......
Hugs,
Jenny

Hi Jenny, Unfortuantely, I didn't start nursing school yet so I was kinda in the dark. I just thought "doc knows best". I was prescibed the med 3X a day for 3 days, I took one the night of the m/c and two the next day before I couldn't stand the pain anymore. I'm a broken record but :-) tomorrow is the day for the big okay, I did ask at the time (the bad doc) when can we start trying again and she said after about 2 cycles, so we have been trying for the last 6 months (even though that was too soon). I did have a concieving appt with my new doc and she wanted me to get my records. She gave me the okay without any tests or bloodwork. I love my new doc and don't think she realized how serious the situation was. I didn't emphasize it b/c I just wanted to be preggo. But the more I talk to people they keep saying that it was wrong and negligent to put me on that med and that I should have had an easy transition.  I know now to ask a million questions and after being in nursing school I know what to expect but I am so confused as to why I was prescribed this and if it was a mistake or misjudgement by my doc. I don't want to get anyone in trouble but I want to prevent this from happening again with this particullar doc. The tricky problem is I work for the hospital that the doc is affiliated with. (oh well, a mistake is a mistake) I just want a happy and health pregancy.

Nicole- Did you take the med? Did you know prior being a nursing student that methogen stopes bleeding? That is to bad what the dr did that is why I always ask 20 questions. Have you been checked out since this and got the green light to ttc? You need to be certain your body is all set and ready to go. Best wishes to you and good luck...

No I was lightly bleeding, I actually talked to a legal nurse where I work and she said that I have a pretty strong case to negligence. I don't want to sue b/c it was heartbreaking enough but the doc almost killed me. (which is what the ER doc said to DH) I did a lot of research on the subject and it said that the prescription was to stop bleeding and most people get it if they were bleeding for weeks on end. I was just m/c that day that she prescribed it. I am very confused as to why I received the med, I didn't question it at the time b/c I trusted my then doc. (new doc now) I should have done my research but I thought "doc knows best" and I have never been through that before. Needless to say I might be moving forward with a case or just hope that tomorrow with my new doc will bring some good news. I never asked why I was recieving the med, she said it would stop my bleeding even though I was only spotting. I didn't know, I just thought that is what you do. I just hope the clot didn't leave permanent damage. I find out tomorrow if I need another D&C or if anything is scarred from the event.

I am a little confused??  DId he give it to you to stop the miscarriage? If it is to stop bleeding I can see a clot happening but when you miscarry the bleeding and contractions are what gets the miscarriage material (lack of a better term) out.  Were you hemmoraging?

I'm sorry for your loss. Methogen is supposed to stop the bleeding I was prescribed that for all of my deliveries and when I had ovarian surgery. Interesting you say a softball sized clott because I always ended up with a hematoma after being given it. After being prescribed it after my delivery of my 3rd baby i ended up a month later going in for surgery to remove my hematoma and after being given it in the hospital after my ovarian surgery I ended up back in surgery. I will have to ask my dr if there is a correlation between the two. How are you feeling now? Has the bleeding stopped. I would take it easy for now and try to relax. I would definately follow it up with your dr and try to get some answers. Make sure if you have any problems you go straight to the hosp. I'm really sorry. If you need to talk I'm here. I wish you the best. Take care of yourself and I hope you have a nice and easy recovery.
