No heartbeat - Baby measuring 3wks behind my dates

Hi i am (or i thought) i was 9wks pregnant as my LMP was 22.09.08, started to slightly bleed so went for a scan today! Dr said that baby only measuring 5-6wks and cant see/hear heartbeat, and im booked to go back for another scan next week. i have had 3 children and two miscarriages previous, but unlike other times when i have miscarried i have and am still putting on weight and have and still am suffering from bad morning/noon/night sickness! i am quite confused!! as in previous instances i have been told there and then that i am miscarrying and as hard as it was dealt with that, i am now facing 7days of uncertainty and need some advice??? i know what will be will be but have never been in this situation before - i.e. as to whether i am pregnant or starting to miscarry :-(

TQ82: First i would llike to say im sorry you are going threw this.

The thing about pregnancy is and why many women dont no that the baby has stoopped growing is bcuz the placenta has not recognized that the baby has died and will send signals to the brain that the baby is still alive,so you could still gain weight and feel preggo, and sometimes it takes a few weeks for the placenta to recognize the baby has died. And when that happens, the body will start to miscarry.  That is called a missed m/c, when you go in and baby is not measuring what it should be, or you go in see heartbeat and go back 2-3 weeks later and no heartbeat.

I had a missed m/c. U/S showed i was 10weeks 1day. I shouldve been 10weeks 3 days.  I no my body pretty well and new something was wrong just from me waking up not being hungry so i went to er to get labs drawed and u/s, and sure enough there was no heartbeat. Went back week later hcg levels decreased by alot and second u/s baby did not grow anymore and still no heartbeat.  That was my first m/c.

See what the next appointment shows and make sure your hcg levels are drawn, like popcorn said dont rely soly on u/s.  There have been cases where women were misdiagnosed and was told they were going to m/c and should have d&c but they decided to have natural m/c and come to find out, even though there levels had dropped, and baby was not measuring and had no heartbeat, 2-3 weeks later baby was still there and was alive, and they ended up having a healthy baby, so misdiagnoses does happen.

We are here if you need to talk and you are not alone.  I will keep you in my prayers.

I know how you are feeling and you just don't know who to talk to. I had a similar thing happen. I was supposed to be 11 weeks and the ultrasound said I was 6 weeks. The ultrasound technician kept saying that maybe my dates are off, but I knew they couldn't be as I had been tracking everything. I was also confused as to why my boobs were still sore and why I was so tired at night (I didn't have morning sickness). I asked my doctor and she said that eventhough the baby is not viable, the hormones it excretes are still ongoing. Your uterus will stay the same and all your current symptoms until your hcg levels start to drop. They will drop if you are having a m/c and they will drop dramaticaly if you end up having a d &c or natural miscarriage.
I would ask your Dr to get your hcg levels checked by doing blood work. You don't want to rely solely on an u/s. They will do them a few days apart. There is a thread on here telling you what your levels should be at the week your in. Mine were at 18000 one day and then 14000 two days later  when they should have been at least 100000.
Don't hesitate to write to us, we're here to help. My toughts are with you.

I am sorry that you are going through this, it is a very upsetting and frustrating time for you. I had a missed miscarraige in may. I had a heartbeat on one scan and 2 weeks later there was none . I still felt pregnant even though the baby had died, i found it very difficult to accept that i was no longer pregnant. I had a bad pregnancy so knew that there was a high chance i would miss but i still tried to have hope. we must always have hope till we are told other wise.

Try not to think to hard about it , i know this is easier said than done.  I have been there before and 7 days feels like an eternity to wait ,.

I wish you all the best ,  it is so sad than anybody should have to go through this , try to get as much love and support from your family and friends as you can. It helps to talk things through. Good luck.
