d and c with no anesthetic

I have recently had a miscarriage at 11 weeks and have not got a private medical aid, so went to a local state hospital. I under went a painful manual pelvic examination to be told that I had lost the baby, and then had a d and c with only a pain killer. (pethadine) Is this normal procedure, if you are unfortunate enough to not be able to afford a medical aid scheme in south africa? Is this what all women with no medical aid have to suffer because of they cannot afford a medical aid?

I am struggling with this as the few friends I know who have suffered miscarriages have got medical aid's and so all had a full anesthetic. I am still having a few nightmares now about a month later.

Any support would be appreciated.

Did they not offer a local anaesthetic either?  Move to New Zealand.  I had a D&C last night under general (state funded).  Recovery time is far less when you don't have the stress on top of everything else!  I'm so sorry for what you had to go through.  Thats just horrible.

you were treated in such a discusting way. just because you can not afford it. im so sorry you went through the misscarriage, then this. i am no expert and have no knowledge in the field of D&C but its wrong you were treated this way. im appalled, shocked and actually quite upset about this. i hope you are ok (ofcourse you are not, you are having nightmares) but i would check up on this in your country. No one (no matter their wealth or nationality) should be treated like this. i hope you can over come this and move on. You are in my prayers. xoxo
