VEP test

My neuro says he has done all the tests he can to find what is causing my problems. (The tests were done 12 months ago) I had an LP, BAER, EEG, SSEP and of course 2 MRI's 2 months apart plus a neuro psychology assement. He was ready to sign me off but I have asked for another MRI. (Both of the MRI's show 1 lesion.)

The question is should I have had a VEP test ? I have aproblem with face pain around my and I suffer a bit of double vision when I am tired I have not had ON. I guess this is why he has not ordered the test.

I'm also dissappointed he is signing me off, he didn't seem to think that it might be a case of waiting to see if things show later. He felt done the tests the negative can't help. Goodbye!

Just wondered what you all thought about the VEP

I looked at your name again and thought it was appropriate as that is what your journey has been- twists and turns and then the odd blank wall is thrown in. I feel very sorry for you and can sense your frustration.I would go for the VEP but it may not be final piece of the puzzle whether it is normal or abnormal and it sounds like your journey has a little way to go yet.

Don't feel that you have to leave the forum..we will continue to be there for you as you remain in limboland and I hope that the answers are just round the next corner.

With love and hugs

A positive VEP indicates a problem with the Optic nerve, chasm or tract..  It doesn't mean MS, although a lesion is a common cause.  There are other things that can cause signal latency.  An abnormal VEP is a dianostic sign, but not all that specific.  An abnormal VEO where the wave form is maintained and there is increased latency is pretty much considered an inflammation of the optic nerve, hence Optic Neuritis.

Hi Twist.

I know that the VEP can show up as being negative- but you can still have MS.

If it's  positive then that may help with a dx.

I would discuss your concerns with him - especially about him signing you off.  If you are continuing to have symptoms - what does he think is causing those?   I agree with luvnGod - if you already have a lesion - and continue to have symptoms - it seems follow up MRIs make sense.  Is your lesion in a place typical for MS?  If the lesion isn't from MS -  what does the doc think caused it?
Good luck.

In my opinion, it wouldn't hurt to ask for the VEP, especially if you are having pain near your eye and a bit of double vision.  Does your neuro know about that?  I would also not let him dimiss you knowing lesions are showing.  I'm surprised he didn't suggest a repeat MRI anyway to see if something has changed.  This is simply my opinion.  I have learned to be more proactive in my health since experiencing this stuff.  No one will do it for me :)

Blessings to you on this journey, I know as so many on here what a tough road it is.
