3 months not swallowing

I had disc surgery replacement on 6.7.5.2 with plate on Feb 11, 2008.  Since I cannot swallow I was sent home from the hospital after 2 weeks with a stomach tube.  I have swallowing therapy once a week and do exercises at home.  Next week I am having a stimulator treatment on my throat for an hour at a time 3 times a week.  My hard collar is gone and now wearing soft collar.  All pain gone except sore throat feeling that just started.  Can swallow my own salvia but only about 2 oz of water a day.  I am being feed 1200 calories through tube.  I am male, 70 years old.  My problem is my negativity in thinking I will never swallow.  Please , I need some positive medical reinforcement.  Thank you.

Thank you for your response, but I was incorrect on the disc's it was 2,3,4  & 5.  Presently it is the epiglottis that is not functioning.  With this information do you still feel the same.  Thank you.

Hi there.

I'm sorry to hear what had happened, but at the same time admire you from enduring all of these events.  With progressive rehabilitation and constant tests, I believe that you can be able to recover your swallowing function as this may only be due to the stress that you incurred during the surgical procedure.  I cannot see any definite reason why you would not recover your swallowing function.  Be strong and proceed with your rehabilitation as scheduled.  Hoping for your full recovery.

Regards and God bless.
