Brain Stem

My mother had gall bladder surgery and after being home a couple of days, she started having pain and throwing up. She was admitted into the hospital and while there she asperated. She was in a coma state in ICU after that for 2 weeks. The doctor said only her brain stem was working. She moved her mouth, I saw it and 2 co workers of hers that stopped by to visit also saw it. Can a person move their mouth if only the brain stem is working??
I just need to know for sure. Thank you.

The brain is very complex.  I just want you to know I am thinking of you.  How are you doing?  This must be very difficult.  My son had a brain injury a little over a year ago and it was very difficult to watch.  I felt so helpless.  I am here for you any time.  I may not have the answers but I can sure listen.  ((hugs))
