Dear Doctor

I have had some twitching in my thumb for the past 5 days, and also have experienced minor weakness in my legs and hands after the twitch began, but am unsure of this is due to anxiety associated with the twitch,or the start of a cold(I have had some symptoms of a cold today). I would really appreciate if you could clear up some issues for me.
1) Is twitching a common or uncommon symptom of MS?
2) What if any is the difference between a twitch and a tremor?
3) Do twitches in MS occur in isolation? (It’s only happening in my thumb)
4) Does the muscle weakness associated with MS occur only in the area of twitching?
5) What is defined as true muscle weakness i.e. should one only worry when the muscle weakness is obvious? (I have not really noticed any decrease in strength)
6) Is there one set rule where twitching is involved in relation to MS. (I have sometimes twitched when lying down, or sometimes twitched when active e.g. doing weights).

I appreciate your input.
In response to your questions, I have no altered sensations, fatigue, muscle cramps and exercise intolerance?
During excersise, lifting weights, jogging etc. there has been no loss of strength.
But my anxiety levels have been up lately.

Hello con644 ,

It seems you have been having some neuropathic condition like Benign fasciculation syndrome which is a neurological disorder characterized by fasciculation of various voluntary muscles in the body like that in eyelids, arms, legs, and feet. The twitching may be occasional or may go on nearly continuously. Definite diagnosis  of MS cannot be made until other disease processes have been ruled out.. The diagnosis of MS is more of clinical .
Also, evaluation of Cerebrospinal fluid is recommended for the diagnosis of inflammatory conditions. An electromyograph test is desirable to assess your condition better.
Do you also have altered sensations, fatigue, muscle cramps and exercise intolerance?
Has your anxiety levels incraesed in the recent past?
Do not be panicky and go in for a evaluation.
