Extrusion at c5-c6 is surgery my only option?

my mri shows a large central and left paramedian disc herniation/extrusion at c5-c6 resulting in central spinal
stenosis and cord compression with flatting of the ventral aspect of the cord and impingment on the left-sided c6 nerve
root.
small left paramedian and posterolateral disc herniation at c4-c5.

I was told today that surgery is my only option. That one accident could cause me to be paralized.
Is there any other options? Surgery is the last thing I want..

Hi,
I also have to herniated discs in my back (L5-S1 non-extruded) Do you think I should take physical therphy for this before having neck surgery or after? And if I wait to have the therphy after surgery and everything goes well, can you give me an idea of how long it will all take ?
Thank you for all your help. I'm seeing a doctor that worker's comp chose and he didn't
have much patience for my questions.

Hi there.

For these situations where the spine is in danger of compression, surgery may indeed be the only option to relieve this problem.  some milder forms of herniation are managed conservatively, initially with physical therapy and pain medications.  However, more of these patients progressed and eventually would need surgery as well.  Talk to your doctor about the risks involved, and make sure you understand very well.

Regards and God bless.
