It should also be noted that although the old definition of ACM requried the herniation to be at least 5mm in length, the leading experts along with several studies have shown that IN symptomatic patients ACM 1 can be present with a less than 5mm herniation. Other physiological factors need to be taken into account along with neurological study and symptoms.
I would also recommend the sites mentioned by the previous poster
Keith-Two great sites to reseach Chiari I Malformation are: World Arnold Chiari Malformation Assoc. and Chip's Chiari Page. Lots of good info on symptoms and support. CSF(cerebral spinal fluid) studies (Cine MRI flow study) are very helpful to determine abnormalities in the velocity/pressures in the posterior cranial fossa. These abnormal pressures are the leading cause of syringomyelia. My 12 year old son was Dx with Chiari last year-after 4 different consultations with neurosurgeons, we did do surgery but did not do a "Dural graft". He is back playing State Cup level soccer and is painfree and sxs free. PS. I'm a Physical Therapist and was very reluctant to rush into any surgical intervention. Good luck, Kathy
The MRI findings of cerebellar ectopia just mean that the back part of your brain is displaced downwards a little bit. Depending on how far down they're displaced, it may or may not be considered an Arnold Chiari malformation (5mm is the cutoff). As I have never seen your MRI, I cannot further comment on your specific case except to say that this does not explain your symptoms. We see this all the time on MRIs and most of the time they're incidental or clinically silent, meaning they don't cause any neurological symptoms.
As for your particular symptoms, they don't appear to localize to just one area of the nervous system. If demyelinating disease is suspected, further evaluation could be considered such as a spinal tap and evoked potentials of your arm and leg to see if there is a problem with the nerves. Bloodwork to look for thyroid disease, vitamin deficiency (B12) or inflammatory diseases such as lupus may also be considered. GOod luck.
Hi Keith again failed to mention i had a repeat MRI......showed no evidence of demylenation...CEREBELLAR TONSILLAR ECTOPIA noted and CHARI I MaFORMATION cannot be ruled out.......whatis that
Sorry about the double post i appreciate all the help
