Mild Congenital Myopathy?

Hiya, I'm Lyssie and I have a question so will ge to the point.

I had an EMG and I now have the results for that EMG, it says this on the report:

"She also has mild weakness of the facial muscles with subtle EMG changes sugggestive of mild myopathy (mild congenital myopathy) The relevance of this to her scoliosis is uncertain"

It also says: "Repetitive Stimulation of right nasalis and o.oculi at 3 Hz showed no significant decrement at rest or post activation"

I don't know what this means :( sorry!

Also how will this be to do with my scoliosis as I think my scoliosis is idiopathic (it's inherited, mum, aunty, cousin and granny have it)?

Thank you! Lyssie :)

Hi there, thank you very much for your reply, Dr!

I had the EMG because I was referred to a Neurologist by my Urologist! (bladder problems) and they wanted to test the nerves as I've had leg pain and back pain for a while now (had scoliosis surgery) so did Evoked Potentials and EMG, but I actually didn't got there to get my face tested but the Neurophysiologist noticed something going on with my eyes and he tested them with his fingers then put one of the EMG needles into my face.

It explains that everything else is normal (in both legs) and gives the numbers and evaluations for them.

I've not had a muscle biopsy or CK levels check I'm afraid.

I'm afraid I don't see a Neurologist anymore due to insurance problems and I'm now with the National Health Service (I'm in the UK) although I am seeing my family Dr this Friday so will ask her about this and take the report with me.

Thank you very much, it's good to have an understanding, Alyssa.

Thanks for using the forum. I am happy to address your questions, and my answer will be based on the information you provided here. Please make sure you recognize that this forum is for educational purposes only, and it does not substitute for a formal office visit with a doctor.

Without the ability to examine and obtain a history, I can not tell you what the exact cause of the symptoms is. However I will try to provide you with some useful information.

Why did you have an EMG performed? Myopathy is a term to describe a disease of the muscle. It is unclear why you may have a myopathy without further information. Have you had a CK level checked? Have you had a muscle biopsy? There is a group of myopathies that fall under the category of congenital myopathies. Some of these myopathies have associated scoliosis (e.g., nemaline myopathy and multi-minicore disease). I suggest you discuss your EMG results with your neurologist.

Thank you for this opportunity to answer your questions, I hope you find the information I have provided useful, good luck.
