Optic Nerve Disorder in 4 year old PLEASE HELP!

My daughter was born on 19th December,1996. She was a premature baby approximately by 7 weeks. Her weight at the time of birth was 1.8 kg. She had convulsions at the time of birth and were controlled only when she was 3 years 4 months old. We had her MRI done on 10th dec,1998 (i.e. at 2 years of age) The MRI states " The study reveals evidence of confluent area of hyperintensity in the periventricular deep white matter and centrum semiovale bilaterllay on fast FLAIR and T2 weighted images. There is thining of thee deep white matter with ex-vacuo dilatation of the lateral ventricles. especially the optical horns. The cerebral sulci and fissures are also prominent. There i thining of the corpus collasum. The cerebellum and brainstem do not show any focal lesion. The forth ventricle is unremarkable. While the third ventricle is too prominent. MR features are suggestive of superatentorial deep white matter demyelination and leucomalacia.
: As her doctor neurologist had doubt about her vision we had her VEP test done on 10th Dec,1997 which shows Latency (mS) P100 as 162.0 and 164.0 the same test done on 2nd Sept,2000 shows the same as 157 & 160 in both the cases "Delayed Vision".

: I would like to know whether any treatment exists for such disorders, if so, from where we can get that.

: thanks

Dear Anil Sindhwani:

I am very sorry to hear about your daughter.  It sounds like she had some periventricular leukomalacia due to prematurity.  At this point, there is very little you can do to remodel the damage already done.  Unfortunately, currently we do not know how to make brain cells divide, differentiate, make proper connections, etc.  However, there is much one can do to optimize her potential.  Early intervention concerning schooling, physicial therapy, and occupational therapy for motor and fine motor skills. I wish there was something I could tell you in the way of correcting the damage already done, but currently our technology just doesn't have those answers.

Sincerely,

CCF Neuro MD
