I was recently attached to a 5/0 barbed fishing hook and an angry 20lbs fish for about 30 seconds. She shook her head a few times while we were connected. this caused the hook to act like a wind shield wiper inside my thumb. ouch!
The hook entered palm side immediately above the MCP joint (where finger enters hand).
After I freed myself, my thumb was completely numb and shaking erratically. The back of my hand was numb as well.
Emergency room visit (2 hours later) numbness reduced to just thumb. Doctor glanced at it said I'll be fine. I was told because I can feel under the skin the important nerve wasn't damaged, only the nerves going to the skin. "they will grow back in two weeks or so.". That was 4 days ago and nothing has changed. I feel an "electric shock" when I tap the area the hook entered. My thumb feels asleep on the side the hook entered.
Was the ER doctor correct? Should I just tough it out or do i need to see a specialist?
