Symptoms still lingering....

Hi, I have posted on here before, but figured I`d post again since I haven`t really got any answers as to what might be causing my problems. My problems began in Aug. 2002 after having my baby. I had my baby girl vaginally with an epidural. The epidural had to be placed twice. I was also given Group B strep meds during the delivery. I also lost a lot of blood, and had an episiotomy.... Well, about 2 weeks after having her, I noticed that my hands and feet were tingling slightly, and that my left foot seemed to have a numb spot on the inside of my heel. I then started having these strange vibrating sensations all over & twitching everywhere. I decided to see a neurologist. I went to a neurologist who ran some tests (this was last October `02.) Blood- normal, MRI of brain and C-spine- normal, Nerve conduct. test- read "essentially normal". Physical exam- normal. He said he didn`t know what else to do and sent me on my way. I then seen a second neurologist. This was a few months later. He did an evoked potentials test which checked the path of the nerve from my foot to my brain- it came back normal. Toxic metals blood test- normal. He said to come back on a wait and see basis. Well, I was recently at his office because I am still experiencing some of this, and he said he wanted to send me to a university hospital, because he doesn`t know what else to do. I am still having twitching all over, strange sensations here and there and my feet tingle after exercise. I don`t know what else to do. I can`t help but worry about MS. What is your opinion on this?

Differences between ESI's & EAI's:  ESI's (Epidural Steroid Injections) are NOT the same as EAI's (Epidural Anesthesia Injections)!

In fact, ESI's are rarely used, if ever, for childbirth.

The chemical composition of ESI's are very different from EAI's, since they contain powerful steroids that are suspended in a depot ingredient, usually Polyethylene Glycol. (DOT-3 Brake Fluid) ESI's also contain preservatives that are known to be neurotoxic (damaging to nerve tissue) such as Benzyl Alcohol and Myristyl Gamma Picolinium Chloride. EAI's do not! Yet they can produce many of the same severe side effects as ESI's depending what they are mixed with.  You should obtain a copy of your records to see what drug(s)were used for your spinal injections, because sometimes steroids are mixed in.

ESI's are wrongfully given to people with spine related nerve root inflammation (such as disc herniations) and EAI's are usually given to lessen the pain associated with childbirth!

However, you should be made aware that the injectable drugs used for both ESI's and EAI's are NOT approved by the FDA for that route of administration. Don't believe it? Give them a call...1-888-463-6332. As a matter of fact, ESI's of Depo-Medrol (the drug used most often) is strongly "not recommended" for such use by the manufacturer, Pharmacia & Upjohn, because they and the FDA have received too many reports of "severe medical events"! Doctors are either not aware of these new warnings are have decided to ignore them. (Which they can legally do!)(A copy of this Pharmacia document is on our Group Site)

My campaign is currently drafting a petition to have Depo-Medrol contraindicated by the FDA for epidural administration. Many people have been severely harmed by ESI's of Depo-Medrol and a few other injectables. There have been 356 deaths reported to the FDA in the last 4 years and over 14,356 reports of serious medical complications, such as Arachnoiditis, an insidious disease of the spinal cord caused by the drug when epidurally injected by ignorant doctors. How do I know? It happened to me and approximately 7000 others worldwide.

I just felt it was important for you all to know that there are many different aspects to epidurals... they are not all the same.... and some come with higher risks than others, even EAI's! Not everything is as simple as that other post says. Did you know that if plain water, or even the blood of a patient is mistakenly allowed to enter the spinal cord, that it is potentially fatal, or that a serious life altering medical condition can occur? Now just think what would happen when a physician who performs ESI's or EAI's misses the epidural region, (It's only a few mm's in width) and injects the compound of steroids or anesthetics along with their other toxic ingredients directly into the spinal cord by error? (We have seen and read Medical Journals at NIH's National Library of Medicine that says that this same harm can occur in patients even without a spinal cord puncture!) So........

Be smart, stay informed

Kindest regards
Dennis

You said you got these symptoms 7 months after your first child, and 12 months after your second child.  How long did your symptoms last the first time?  They went away before you had your second child and then came back?  Did they go away before you got pregnant the second time?  How many years apart are your two children? Thanks.

I would say somewhat of a problem due in stressful situations (Type A personality!).  But definitely worse since kids.  Saw my family doc yesterday and he has referred me to a neurologist.  The appt is Dec 17.  I am also having some problems with restless leg (Right one) during the night.  I can't sleep.  This also started during my first pregnancy.  What we don't go through for our kids!  Guess I have to just wait it out here at see what the neuro says.  How are you doing?

Did you have any blood pressure problems prior to the pregnancies?

I have had BP problems through both pregnancies and have labile- or fluctuating bp all the time.  I can take it at home and it will be fine but at work or in the clinic it is always sky high.  Seems to be stress related...?  No epidural but was a vaginal delivery.  I just keep wishing it would all go away and I could go back to living without worrying so much.  Will see my doc in a few  days - I am guessing MRI is next.  My s/s didn't start until 5mo PP.  Currently 6mo PP.  Keep me updated!

Hi, did you have an epidural w/ your youngest child? When did your high BP start? I started having BP problems and neurological problems 2 weeks after my baby was born. I was getting up at night a lot then too. I`m 14 mos. PP now, and still have a few problems. I had her vaginally w/ an epidural.

I have spent hours on the net trying to figure myself out.  This is the first time i have found someone who seems to have the same problems as me.  I am also a mother of two.  My youngest is 6months old and my symptoms began in the middle of the night after getting up with my 2 year-old about a month ago.  I have had tingling sensations in my hands, feet, legs, arms, upper back, cheeks, nose and lips.  They have at times seemed to disappear and I hardly notice them if I keep moving but as soon as i sit down they are more apparent.

Being a nurse has not helped either as you sometimes know too much but not really enough!  I have seen my family doctor who prescribed Toprol XL for my high BP and tachycardia (mostly related to stress i think - i seem to have a severe case of white coat syndrome).  All blood tests CBC, thyroid, B12 etc have come back as normal.  I saw him after a week on toprol and my s/s seemed to have abated enough for me to tell him I was doing better.  He told me that being a wife and mom is more stressful than you think and I should take time for myself (tell that to my husband -I thought!)  Also told me to see him in 6 wks and continue on Toprol.

Now it has been 1 week since my last visit and the s/s are back.  I am beside myself trying to care for my family and deal with the stress this is causing me.  My little Katie has an appt for shots in a week and I will definitely be mentioning my exacerbation to him.  We thought the whole MRI route could be avoided after the s/s waned but I am guessing that will be the next step.

Would love to know how the others of you turned out!

I have been wondering about postpartum neurological happenings lately. I'm 38 and my son is 11 months old. Had a c-section and have felt very chipper. No immediate complaints. The baby nurses to the extent that I still have not resumed menstruation, so my body is low in estrogen right now.

6 months after I had the baby, I noticed tingling in my lower lip--but only when I touched it; otherwise the lip feels normal. It wasn't correlated with any recent dental anesthesia. A maxillofacial surgeon took a Panorex shot of my jaw and said he couldn't figure it out, really, except to say that everything looked good. The tingling is bilateral and follows the mental nerve pathway. It hasn't changed since its onset.

10 months after I had the baby, I noticed a kind of clumsy left hand. Just clumsy enough to make me notice when I knit, especially the 3rd and 4th fingers, a bit of forearm fatigue and a feeling of triceps and scapular weakness. I have also felt a strange itching just inside the left scapula for several months. I carry the baby all the time with the left arm and wonder if this might not be from shoulder stress. I also fall asleep while nursing the baby with my neck cranked into painful positions.

Next, I felt a slight tingling of the cheekbone, lower eyelid and wing of my nose on the right side. It went away for a week and now has returned and bothered me for about a week and a half. Sometimes it feels as if lotion were smeared on my face, and sometimes as if the skin were slightly sunburned. The sensation changes constantly, but keeps within the V2 branch of the nerve, and rarely remits.

I'm hoping that this is just nursing hormones and stress. My husband is having cardiac trouble right now, and that is when the hand and trigeminal problems showed up. I worry most about serious CNS problems, and plan on seeing my regular doctor later this month.

Incidentally, my mother, with three in diapers, began to choke when she tried to eat. It went on for weeks and she thought she was dying, but liquid phenobarbital from her M.D. cleared it up. This was back in the 1950s.

Hello everyone!! I was searching the boards and was astonished when I came across your posts.  I myself am having the same symptoms.  My second son was born 7/18/03 and my symptoms started on 9/15/03.  I have pins and needles in my hands and feet, a vibration sensation in my right leg- sometimes the left.  And I have burning sensations in spots all over my body.  I too have had the gammitt run- MRI of brain with and without contrast- Neg.  MRI of C-Spine-Neg.  EEG- Neg. Spinal Tap-Neg.  Blood work included- Lymes, ANA and Sojourns Syndrome- All negative.  I am currently seeing a doctor at university of pennsylvania and they chalk this all up to "complicated migraines and post partum stress".  I have NEVER had a headache per say with any of these symptoms.  I have no appetite and am extremely sick to my stomach.  That could be nerves-- I am worried about this.  I don't feel like myself and am sooooo tired.  Not to mention that my symptoms get worse when I ovulate and have my period.  I anyone should want to contact me please do- Email me at ***@****.
Take care and I wish everyone well.

Yes, I do notice that they are worse when I`m stressed out. But they never go away. What were your symptoms? How long did they last? Ever have any tests? Thanks...

i had some weird feelings after having my son, it only did it when i over did myself. maybe you should just take it easy for a while, see if it helps at all or at least makes a different.

It may be stress... but I find it hard to believe that stress lasts 14 months straight, and has left a numb spot on my foot that doesn`t go away. I don`t think my neurologist thinks it is stress realted as much anymore either as he used too, considering he is sending me to a university now.

As I was reading your post & before I even got to the end, I was thinking it could be stress.  Especially after giving birth.

If the MRI's of your brain and spine are normal then the diagnosis of MS is unlikely. The symptoms you describe could be do to MS, inflammatory disorders, spinal disease, stress, and sometimes migraine. I would agree with the second neurologist and recommend a second opinion with a neurologist at a large academic center. If you are in the area we have excellent neurologists who could see you. Good luck.

Maybe, I guess anything is possible. But the doctors I`ve went to haven`t given me any possibilities that it could be, other than stress....

Maybe it's not a nerve problem but a scar tissue problem resulting from your delivery/episiotomy.  Perhaps scar tissue formed over the femoral artery or another central vein or artery?  Perhaps even over a nerve.
