Dear Candy:
The vast majority of side effects from
Nardil are from the interactions with foods and other medications. Tegratol is not one of the direct interfering medications and food. It takes several weeks for
Nardil to have it's psychiatric effects. The biological action of
Nardil is to irreversibly bind to the MAO enzyme located outside the mitochondrial membrane. Most medications are metabolized by the liver but I am not sure if there is activiation of the cytochrome P450 system (I don't think so and the Pharmacology texts seem to not mention it). To be on the safe side, I would monitor the tegratol level once you reach your target Nardil dose. Of course, if you have a breakthrough seizure I would monitor the level at that point.
Be sure you are aware of the interacting medications and I hope you do not eat alot of cheddar cheeze.
Sincerely,
CCF Neuro MD
