cauda equina syndrome

I had a injury at work resulting in a rapid loss in nuerological function. I went to e.r. and had a emergency surgery, then another one the day after that due to continued compressin. My question is i did not have to catherize myself and then one year later i have to start this catherizing myself. Why after one year would i have to start this? I do have 3 other herniated disks at l4 t9 t12 could this be the reason?

Hi there.

I'm sorry to learn what you have undergone, I know it is very difficult.  Your present symptoms of bladder dysfunction necessitating catheterization may indeed be explained by your herniated discs especially the L4 level which is in proximity with the nerves that are controlling a person's bladder function.  There may also be new compressions that have yet to be discovered.  I suggest you have this evaluated by your spine surgeon or a neurologist so that you can be properly evaluated.  Hoping for the best.  Regards and God bless.
