Thank you very much for your detailed answer. As a quick follow-up question; is it possible to have a partial facial nerve palsy eg. normal movement around the eyes but dysarthria with sudden onset and too much saliva? In this case, swallowing is unaffected and there is no pain or other symptoms.
Hi Dear,
The seventh cranial nerve is the facial nerve. Its main function is motor control of most of the muscles of facial expression. It also is important for the flow of saliva from the glands.
The ninth nerve (glossopharyngeal nerve) is the main nerve for swallowing, but also others play a role in swallowing which include the facial (seventh), fifth- the trigeminal nerve, the tenth- the vagus nerve and the twelfth - the hypoglossal nerve are also involved.
Best.
