stress,fatique, and memory

hi i have always had problems with fatique even when i was 13 or 14 it was always passed as allergies but ii woud sleep for weeks at a time i had countless mono check and anemia checks as well they wher always fine.  i am know 24 and under a tremindase amount of stress i have been told that i have a anxiaty disorder because i feel like i cant get enough air and my pulse goes up to about 115-120 i did have one normal ekg.  i am really stressed right know i cant sleep, i do not have much appetite and when i get up i feel like i have not slept(hung over)  i feel like a throbbing sensation on the side of my head just above the ear and it will begine to have a numbing tinkling affect that will eventually cover at least half of my face and sometimes will involve my arm usually the left this is very wierd i dont know what is going on?  any idieas?  also we have a 30 mo little girl with a tethered cord she will need surgery but before she does she needs a mri of cervical and theraxic spine to rule out a particulare defect that has to be corrected at the same time as the tethereing an a build up of fluides,  she will also need a urodynamic studies do you have any idea what this will in tell?  do you know about what percent of kids will have bowel bladder problems resulting from the tethering  she also has a partial sacreal agenesis and conginital scoliosis with a large centrslcannale is that of any danger to have a large central cannal?

Dear JMH:

Sorry to hear about your symptoms and your daughter's problems.  The MRI will give a good idea what the extent of the tethering might be from and the surgery that may or may not be needed.  Usually in children with tethered cords and sacral dysgenesis there is some bowel problems (the sacral plexus, nerves, that control the bladder are located in that general area).  There may also be problems in learning to walk (delayed) and leg length differences.  A large central canal or synrinx is not uncommon and alot depends on the MRI to visualize the extent as to what the surgery might involve.  Sorry, without seeing the MRI and examining your daughter, I can't tell you much.

The symptoms that you describe are very generalized and difficult to give you what might be causing them.  Since I am assuming that all your bloodwork and neurological testing have been normal, yes stress and anxiety can play a big factor in your symptoms.  Stress can effect sleep and bad sleep can certainly produce fatigue.  I would sit down and talk with your general physician about your concerns and see what he/she can make out of it all.  Also, when we get stressed, lack sleep, anxious, we tend not to eat properly.  Taken together, this might be contributing significantly to your symptoms.  Sorry, there isn't much I can say or help you with.

Sincerely,

CCF Neuro MD
