Body rocking

Hi,

I wonder if anyone could help me figure out something... Up until about 4 years ago I would body-rock. Im now 34, from the age of I realy dont know when... since my memory started at the age of say 2 i would body rock. I'd lie on the floor and rock for between a few minutes up to 6 hours or more. I'd rock on the floor and day dream and it seems that the rocking motion would help me day dream and I'd end up in almost in a trance. It completly messed up my education... instead of studying I'd body rock and dream whenever possible.... I mean I was totaly addicted to it, it may seam strange but it got worse from childhood. Im my teens and twenties i spent most of my spare time doing this, once I got to the age to start listening to music I'd body rock with music playing, with the different type of music depending one what i wanded to dream about or vice versa. It could be for the whole weekend and I've lost so much my life doing this.... You would'nt believe. I don't believe I'm autistic... i dont seem to show any other signs... I have a good career now and live a happy life but I'd like to understand what happened to me for all those years.

I'm not entirely sure this is the right forum, maybe it should be mental health but if anyone could help me understand I would much appreciatre your thoughts! If not i will try the other forums. Thanks for your time

Hi, my 7 yr old step daughter rocks and signs herself to sleep she puts one hand under her head and the other clasps her pillow to her face and rocks her whole body side to side, as she's getting older and bigger it's getting more violent and quite disturbing to see I'm also frightened she is going to hurt herself, any advise would be greatly appreciated

You are so right.  This is a normal Reaction that carries on I
Into adult life, after a scarry child hood.  57 and I still find comfort in rocking myself to sleep.  It provides security.  Forget the drugs.  Rocking is harmless.  Drugs are not.  If anyone has a problem with me rocking, get out of my bed.  Lol.  And then thank God you were not traumatized as a child.

Wow.. I forced myself to stop rocking about 17 years ago (I am 47) and now I don't seem to have any need to rock. I always thought something was wrong with me for having that compulsion throughout my childhood and younger adulthood. And glad to hear that it is not that uncommon or weird. That said I am happy I no longer rock or need to rock.. but reading through many of the posts and it reminded me how vivid my daydreams were when I was rocking myself to sleep or to music. Somehow I no longer remember that many dreams or daydream as vividly as in the past. That is certainly one thing I do miss.

I've rocked since I was very young(my brother does it as well) I also have always had the need to have a rocking chair. It's very soothing. I always thought that I was weird for doing this. When you get older, the rocking in a regular chair decreases, but you never really stop the need for some sort of  rocking chair. It's intersting that you say you do it to music. I would wake up an hour early for school, just to get my rocking done(with music). My mother in law used to catch me rocking when I was unaware(on the phone or just sitting and relaxing). I was always embarrased about my rocking.  I'm 46 and it's still with me. I try to be very concious of it. I certainly don't rock at work and I don't think I did it at school(that would have put me into to the "crazy kids club") My brother and I would rock while on our knees before bedtime and in the car. We would rock so hard that the car would shake. My parents never scolded us, they just thought it was odd. I am a fairly heavy drinker now and have mild OCD, my brother is a very heavy drinker and  most likely has Borderline personality disorder. I now believe that the rocking has to do with mental illness. However, you can lead a fairly normal life, as long as you realize that you may need help in other areas of your life...rocking is the least of your concerns.

Excuse my previous comment. My bad it's not up to me to tell other people to take medication to stop their body rocking just because I do.

Its ok.. what changed in your life after meds? Did you find another way to de-stress ? How did the effects of the medication stop the urge to think and rock... to wrap the day with thoughts and pondering... I am curious as to how the meds make you feel.  Thanks for your input.. all is appreciated.
