should i get a root canal or an extraction

I have a large cavity in my molar (tooth 19). The dentist told me I need a root canal, but everyone I talk to INSISTS that its going to fall out and its a waste of money. My sister who has had 3 root canals said that everyone of them has fallen out and it would save a lot of money if I just got it pulled and got an implant. I don't have dental insurance so I would appreciate an honest answer. I don't have money to throw away on my teeth.

Root canal teeth usually require additional treatment like a post and core and crown to properly seal and protect the remaining tooth.  Make sure your dentist discusses all the costs involved from beginning to end including the option of removal and replacement with a dental implant and implant crown.

The choice is usually left to the patient.  Both options are widely acceptable.  Just be aware that root canal teeth have about 10-15% failure rate whereas dental implants have about 3-5% failure rate.

Thanks! I'll talk to my dentist. I actually saw her for a second opinion but neither mentioned the option of getting it pulled. When I asked she just gave me all the reasons why a root canal is better. One more thing, if you don't mind.... how long can I go without an implant?
