Annovulatory Periods and continued bleeding

Annovulatory Periods and continued bleeding

Hi everyone. I'm at my wits end. As I mentioned before they cancelled my surgery because of a low blood count. I'm seeing my Hematologist today to set up an iron infusion. I'm scheduled for an endometrial bx on Friday because of continued bleeding on and off. I started bleeding again yesterday after only 2.5 weeks since my last episode of bleeding. My GYN said to hang in there and to do a repeat sono which I did last Friday (still no final), endo bx and saline sono. I know people have this same experience with the hormonal imbalance and irregular periods. Does anyone out there know what the treatment is for this short of a hysterectomy (I'm only 45)? Two years ago when I had another endometrial bx. it showed a proliferative endometrium. I have a feeling that this bx may show some kind of hyperplasia. Does anyone have any experience with this and what have they done for treatment? Can these annovulatory periods cause the cysts that are forming on my ovaries. I'm really uncomfortable between the bleeding and the constant achiness on my right side. I had a sono done Friday the Radiologist said that the complex cyst that they have been following is no longer there(in March they though it could be an ovarian neoplasm). The Radiologist said that I have several other cysts on both ovaries. As I posted before I was scheduled on May 22nd for surgery to remove my right ovary but because of my blood counts it was cx. I'm so confused because now I don't know if they will do surgery or not? I'm sure I'll need a D&C or ablation. Any advice is welcome as well as treatment options. Anna.

I have not had the extremes of your condition, but my problems have been similar.

You are most likely in my time/stage of life - perimenopause.  While I did not have extended bleeding,  when I reached this stage, I did begin having spotting, along with irregular and anovulatory cycles.

When my symptoms began several years ago, my doctor prescribed a progesterone supplementation (Prometrium.)  Then, in 2004, I developed a large complex cyst that was removed, along with the left ovary and fallopian tube.  And then, in late 2005, I started suffering similar symptoms, which led to tests, which led to the discovery of polyps in my uterus.

Rather that go for a TAH, I opted for a D&C/thermal ablation/polyp removal.  Once the endometrium was removed, the uterus was found to be healthy, and the polyps were just benign endometrial hyperplasia.  The "side effect" of the thermal ablation is that now my menstrual cycles consist of mere spots, AND, better still, I no longer have the typical PMS symptoms.   If I did not check on my calendar and see the spots, then I would not know that I've had a cycle.  It is wonderful, and spared me the long recovery of a hystorectomy.

The annovulatory cycles are common for this age bracket/life stage.  Unless you are going for a late-in-life baby, then it is of no concern.  Actually, skipping ovulations is likely to be better for the ovaries.  (In very simple terms, researchers can say that the greater the number of ovulation cycles over a woman's lifetime then the greater the chance of ever developing ovca.)
