Can Endometrial Biopsy miss Cancer?

Hello, Many of you are dealing which issues that are greater than mine but I was hoping for some advice or help.  I was here few months ago dealing with the idea I may have Uterine Cancer.  My biopsy came back negative for cancer but showed that I had an unknown chronic infection.  Since then I have been diagnosed with Lyme disease(actually four days after I received notice the biopsy was negative) and finally getting little bit better-it has been a bit of a rough road.  I went last week for my followup to the endometrial biopsy and they found more fluid, of which my Dr told me the first time it is an indicator of cancer.   I am scheduled for another biopsy Nov 18.  Again I am stressed and concerned-IS IT POSSIBLE TO MISS CANCER ON A BIOPSY?  I also suffer from painful endometriosis and enlarged uterus. i have had 12 ultrasounds over the last 13 months. I am just tired of the discomfort and always being scared that the next test, I might get diagnosed with cancer. I really want a hysterectomy asap regardless of this next biopsy outcome but now I have to wait until the Lyme goes to remission whenever that may be...  I'm 38, premenopausal, we have two beautiful little girls and do not want anymore children, so hysterectomy would be fine for us.

Thank you for responding.  I did get my results back and once again no for uterine and cervical cancer.  Whew. But Dr still will not do ca-125. But she wants me to come back again Jan 30 for another biopsy?  I contacted Mercy Hospital in Baltimore and have an appt with a gyn-oncologist jan 27th.  I will ask about the CT scan. good idea.  I have copies of all my ultrsounds over the past yr, a cd of my last one, and my records for my colonoscopy.  I hope she listens and heeds my concern.  I just do not understand why my gyno will not do the ca-125 or a laproscopy to rule it out. She sent me to get a mammogram at 38, due to symptoms and colon polyps, why not this?  I think my symptoms are enough to raise the concern.  thanks again for your help and advice I will keep posted on my results from Mercy.

I had uterine cancer along with the ovarian. I had an endometrial biopsy which did not show cancer. My primary care physician said that if it's early and the gyn doesn't get the exact, precise spot where the cancer is, then it won't show up.

I would think your D and C biopsy would show uterine cancer. It won't show ovarian. From your symptoms, I'd think there is a chance of ovarian cancer. I had similar symptoms (weight gain, severe bloating, acid reflux, extreme tiredness). No one wanted to consider ovarian cancer. Finally I had a CT scan that showed a 7.5 pound tumor. My doc thought that the abdominal issues were caused by my thyroid problems.

If you have any sort of inflammation in the abdomen, your CA 125 will be elevated.

Are you seeing a gynecologist? Can you get a referral to a gyn-oncologist?

I'm basically over cautious because of my experience. Ovarian cancer is very, very rare, but it is important to diagnose it early. You may have to fight to get a diagnosis that makes sense to you. But it's your body.

Yes each ultrasound was both the outside and transvaginal.  The last ultrasound found fluid in my endocervical canal, the previous one found fluid in my endometrial canal. No masses found.  I have bloating off and on, my girth has increased over the last 6 months, overall weight gain has been steady, but cannot lose even with better food habits, Lyme diet.  I feel so bloated and nausas at times and feel like something is in my stomach on left side, like churning pain, also have gas and bowel issues,as well as non consistent urination frequency and hesitation as well.   I have been diagnosed with the following over the past 16 months Lyme disease, hyatal hernia, endometriosis, enlarged uterus, ovarian cysts periodically, fibroid changes, spastic colon, acid reflux, colon polyps(precancerous + removed), undetermined uterine infection,  jsut had 2nd D+C and awaiting results from this biopsy. Last biopsy, September, showed no cancer.  Dr mentioned she thinks it is infection I am fighting, but there is Clear cell carcinoma that they will check for as well. She has me very scared.   I asked for CA125 and she said no, that the lyme would make me come back too high and I would undergo surgery for something I may not have-with all my pain and discomfort shouldnt I have hysto anyway?  Does it sound like i could have ovarian or uterine cancer?  I am so worried and uncomfortable.

If you are wondering if you have ovarian cancer?  If so, an endometrial biopsy would not determine your ovarian health status. The only way to truly know is surgery and an ovarian biopsy.  Have you had a vaginal ultrasound and a CA 125 blood test?
