Cancer Treatment & Breakthroughs Journal #1 - (January 2009)

Hello everyone!  I don't have time to work on any more articles on my website, but I do run across some things that I believe are very interesting in cancer treatment/research that you may want to discuss with your physician (may still be too 'out there' for them, though).  I hope to do this monthly, but work has me super busy...keep fighting everyone!

1) "Increase" Bloodflow to Tumors?  That's exactly what a study in the journal of "Brain Research" found when rats with cancer was given a combination of chemotherapy and the erectile-dysfunction drug "Levitra".  In this study they found that MORE of the chemo reached the tumors than without Levitra due to it's ability to improve bloodflow.  Hmmm....wonder if this will work for OVCA?  Perhaps do this to get the drug to it then use Avastin later on to kill off the blood supply?  (hint hint to researchers!)

2) Constant Cancer Pain?  The study called 'SPRAY' is looking for participants if you are taking morphine or equivalent to control cancer pain with no success.  They will be investigating a drug for presistent cancer pain.  www.spraytrial.com

3) Anti-Nausea Patch Approved.  FDA cleared "Sancuso" (granisetron) patch for chemo induced nausea and vomitting.   This is excellent since the study says it's basically equivalent to the effectiveness of 'oral' pills of the same class (such as Zofran) or Aloxi.  www.sancuso.com

4) Anti-Constipation Drug.  I posted about this before, but there is no reason to have constipation from opioid induced pain medication (such as morphine or dilaudid/hydromorphone).  'Relistor' (methylnalterxone) is FDA approved to 'block' the receptors these drugs typically bind to which causes the constipation.  So toss out the stool softeners and get something that prevents the problem in the first place! :)

5) How Cancer Spreads Identified.  LEF posted an article how lung cancer spreads by using a protien called "versican" (this is also how Ep. Ovarian Cancer spreads).  It essentially 'hijacks' the immune system causing inflammation with cytokines from the immune system.  This is already known in regards to ovarian cancer (not part of this article, I'm restating from another article), but finding out how to block it is another thing..  This is helping researchers figure out ways to stop versican from being used.   (http://www.lef.org/news/LefDailyNews.htm?NewsID=7747&Section=DISEASE)

6) Cough Medicine Drug Halts Cancer.  This is from NewsRx.com (what is bad for prostate cancer can also be said for ovarian):  A study published in the December issue of the European medical journal Anticancer Research demonstrates that an ingredient used in a common cough suppressant may be useful in treating advanced prostate cancer. Researchers found that noscapine, which has been used in cough medication for nearly 50 years, reduced tumor growth in mice by 60% and limited the spread of tumors by 65% without causing harmful side effects.  (whoa!  don't go trying this on your own, though, this is lab research only so there is no clue yet on how to even use it in real human beings...unless you are a mouse)

I ran all of these by my onc this morning and he said he would look into all of them and he actually did write them down.  I still wish I had an idiot Dr instead of the "go to" guy.

I want to say thank you too Alan. Some of this sounds very interesting.
Hmmm. A bunch of women taking Levitra. If it has similar effects on women that it does on men, all I can say is watch out guys!
I know you do not have the time that you once did, but we all thank  you and appreciate everything you do for us.

Thats interesting about the cough medicine, how ever I can't see anyone taking it, or anything getting approved by the fda since its derived from opium. I'm curious as to how much there feeding the rats and if those poor lil rats are now addicted lol

Oh Alan you are such a doll to keep doing this for us. I am going to look into several of these. I spent most of today crying and eating hydros.  I have butt bone pain that is so severe not even fentanyl patches and hydrocodones are helping.  The anti constipation drug sounds VERY good.  It is a problem that we all have and bowel blockage is the dirty little secret of ovarian cancer.  They may warn you about not getting constipated, but they don't tell you how many of us end up dying because of bowel blockage.  The tumor growth and cough syrup one sounds really great. I am definitley going to look into that one.  Do you know anything about ozone therapy. A friend of mine bought a $2000.00 machine that has tubes that you put in your ear or in your rear end (more membranes to absorb the oxygen) and she left it here for me to use. I have been unable to use it because the smell is so awful it makes me sick, but if I thought it would work I would put up with the nausea and use it.
Thanks again honey.  You are truly a wonderful man and we all owe you so much.
Love,
Jan
