I wrote last week because I was concerned that the radiologist ordered a transvaginal ultrasound in addition to the standard pelvic ultrasound that my OB GYN ordered. The OB GYN ordered the pelvic ultrasound and CA125 as a precaution, since my mother died of ovarian cancer. She was diagnosed Stage 1 at the age of 45 and died less than two years later following a recurrence. I am 39. My older sister has had ovarian cysts that were surgically removed, but were benign. I have never had a cyst diagnosed, nor any menstrual problems. My ultrasound showed multiple small cysts on both ovaries. The largest on the left was 2.0 cm and the largest on the right was 1.9 cm. The radiologist's recommendation was to monitor and repeat the test in 6-8 weeks. I have not spoken to the OB GYN yet, and am trying to figure out what I should ask when I speak to her. I realize that cysts are not normally malignant in women of childbearing age, however I am wondering if you would recommend any special treatment/consideration due to my mother's history. Also, could you give your opinion on the wisdom of having an oopherectomy as a preventative measure? I have heard mixed comments. Any advice that you can give me would be very helpful. Thank you for this wonderful site - it is an enormous help to women!
