How Long to Get Results from Genetic Counseling / Testing?

by Floweringhosta, May 31, 2007 12:00AM
I have an appointment on June 5th for genetic counseling.  Had a mother and aunt who both had ovarian cancer and I have a small ovarian cyst (unknown type)at this time.  I have a gynecologic oncologist that I have just seen and he has referred me to get genetic counseling and BCRA1/BCRA2 testing and also my mother (a cancer survivor) will have her blood tested.  HOW LONG is all of this going to take?  Has anyone been through this part of the process and found it helpful?  I loathe giving detailed medical history AGAIN for about the 5th time.  I am all for the blood test for BCRA1/BCRA2 - that will be new and useful information.  But paying $150 / hour for somebody to take my medical and family medical history yet AGAIN seems a waste of resources.

I don't have children and wouldn't get genetic testing given your family history.  What reason did the GYN/ONC give?  My sister got her ovaries out based on my getting diagnosed with OVCA.  I would do the BRAC Testing because of the breast cancer link.

Hello,

I got the genetic testing done, it took about three months for the results and I didn't have either gene.  So just wanted to let you know I shouldn't have ovarian cancer either by there books.  So I don't know how much genetic testing really helps you.  Cancer does run in my family on both sides and everyone who had or has cancer has had a differect kind.

I hope this helps.

My Mom had the genetic testing for both genes.  It took about 3 months and both were negative.  We dont have any cancer history in our family but needed to know weather her cancer was sporadic or genetic.  This must be done for next generations like myself and my kids.  Although ovca is genetic it can very well be sporadic too.  Its a good thing that you are getting this done.
Good Luck.
