Unclear ultrasound results - ovarian or bowel

I am 19 years old and have been on birth control for 4 years with no problems of bleeding in between periods in the past.  I have been bleeding now for 6 days (normal period is usually only 4 days)and have pain in my lower left.  I had an ultrasound and the doctor even seemed very unclear with the results, this is what the ultrasound report said:
Endometrium measures .4cm, right ovary is slightly plump, 1.7 x 3.5 x x 3.5, left ovary is normal in size 1.5 x 2.3 x 2.9
Both ovaries contain multiple small peripheral follicles.
There is moderate amount of free fluid in the POD and left adnexa surrounding left ovary.
There appears to be small echogenic mass attached to the lateral aspect of the left ovary floating in free fluid.  It is lobulated and about the size of the ovary, but looks more like bowel than solid mass.  However, peristalsis is not seen and I can not exclude a soft tissue mass. I would suggest repeating the examination after thorough bowel cleansing.

I didn't really think that an ultrasound would have anything to do with the bowel.  I am petrified and confused.  My repeat ultrasound isn't for another week. Please help me to understand what this could mean.

Hi There,

First of all, at age 19, I would suggest a blood pregnancy test if you have not had one. Even on the pill, women can get pregnant.  For any abnormal bleeding, one must think about that.

Second, bleeding can occur on the pill if you took another medication such as an antibiotic. that will temporarily change your liver metabolism which metabolizes the pill faster, and you get breakthrough bleeding.

As far as the ultrasound, yes, bowel is commonly seen. It is reasonable to recheck.
Please let us know how your next ultrasound goes.
best wishes

I don't have any advice because I am not in the medical field.  This board seems to be an excellent board especially since actual Dr's monitor and respond to it.  It may take a couple of days before you get a response however.  In the interim, you may want to visit www.ivillage.com.  Go to the message boards and then search for a gynecology board and/or ovarian board.  The boards at ivillage are very, very active so you may get a response sooner but from an average person.  Keep checking back here though for your answer from a Dr.  Not much, but I hope this can help in the meantime.
