Solid mass on my right ovary - very scared

I have been having lower pelvic pain for the last 6 days.  This also happened several weeks ago around July 4.  I went to dr for an exam and did a vaginal ultrasound and found a solid mass on my right ovary.  He said it has to be removed.  It could be cancer but it isn't "statistically" what it should be.  He indicated it was not a cyst or endometriosis.  He also said he might have to cut me but hopes to be able to do it laproscopically.    He seems pretty confident that the right ovary had to be taken out and said he couldn't rule out that he wouldn't have to remove more.

I'm really scared and still having pain, but not as bad as this weekend.  I cant' get another appt. with a different OBGYN for almost 2 weeks and my doc hasn't scheduled the surgery yet.  What should I do and how worried and scared should I be about cancer...why wont' this pain go away???  TIA

Hi there, we certainly understand your emotions.  Did he tell you how large the mass was?  Honestly, you will hear us ladies preach and preach loud, please please go to a GYN/ONCOLOGIST!!  This people are specially trained when doing surgery to search and destroy (remove) any cancer (if it's cancer at all), but they know what they are looking for.  Time and Time again you will hear horror stories here of surgeries being done by regular gyns when it really needed to be done by a specialist.  Please seek out a gyn/oncologist.  Good Luck and please keep up dated!!

I second that.  You want a second opinion from a gynecological oncologist.  Not a gynecologist only and not an oncologist only.  And, if surgery is called for, you want the gyn/onc to do it.

Be glad you're having that pain.  It sent you to the doctor, probably early enough to save your life if the mass turns out to be malignant.  (It's more likely to be benign, by the way.)

Good luck.

Don't fret too much... solid masses can be totally benign.  I agree, get a consult with a gyn/onc if you can.  If you end up having your gyn do the surgery, have frozen sections done during your procedure and have a gyn/onc take over if there is any sign of malignancy.

He did not tell me how large it was and I was so shocked at what I heard I didn't even ask.  I did call a GYN/ONC yesterday but was told I needed a referral.  I went to my regular OBGYN for the diagnosis.  I still do not have the results of my CA125 test, which hopefully will come tomorrow.  I guess I will ask at that time if he would refer me to the GYN/ONC.  Do you know if it has to be another GYN that refers or if it could be a GP?

If your insurance requires the referral, it shouldn't matter, either or, whom ever can get it to you faster, if your GP can, call them tell them what's going on, maybe they can get it done ASAP.  Did you have the sonogram right in the doctors office or at a radiology place?  If at a radiology place, you can call them and have them fax you the report from procedure, you are entitled to that.

The CA125 test came back normal, so hopefully it really is benign.  I have decided to go forward and remove it as soon as possible with my doctor even though he may not be a specialist b/c the pain isn't getting any better or going away.  I'm getting no sleep at night.  I've called about 15 dr's and no one can take me for weeks - The ONC/GYN dr's won't see me unless I'm diagnosed with cancer.  It's really been discouraging trying to get a recommended dr for a second opinion.

Thanks to all of you for your advice.  It's nice to know others care!
