The cancer is back

and I will be getting Carboplatin w/ Taxotere.  I am familiar with the drugs ... can you give me any tricks to deal with the potential nausea and/or exhaustion.  Like:  did you eat the AM of treatment?  Anything you can tell me would be appreciated.  I have several areas we are watching.

Many thanks and God Bless,

Judy C

Thank each and every one of you for your input.  I will be taking steriods the day before, the day of, and the day after chemo to hopefully help with side effects.  I also will get Emend and Aloxi. I have an Rx for 2 other anti nausea drugs.  I'm glad to hear you all ate before tx.  Mine is at 9:15 so breakfast is not a problem.  I just read that you can get nauseous quickly with Carboplatin and thought maybe I should load up some before tx.   Luckily, at my age, I don't have anyone to worry about at home.  Only sweet hubby, Kenny .. he is self-sufficient.  I plan on finishing up a lot of projects next week so I can just go with the flow.  Again, thanks for your messages.  Judy

I am sorry to hear it is back.  I always had to eat something before my chemo.  Sometimes a bagel.  Sometimes a McDonalds breakfast.  Sounds gross, but it really helped me.  I hope you get anti nausea drugs that do the trick.  For me Emend was the best.  Good luck.  I hope it goes easy on you.  Marie

Hi Judy,
Like Chris said, my chemo is also very early in the morning, but I have my coffee and a raisin bran muffin, or toast before chemo. I take a travel mug of coffee with me, too.
I receive pre med anti nausea meds. before the chemo and that works well. In the evening I take a Zofran to prevent nausea and that also works well, if I need it I have the Zofran, when I was on carbo/taxol I needed Zofran for 3 solid days and nights, but it worked. As far as fatigue, you just have to go with it, there's really nothing you can do, it's part of the chemo. Just watch tv, nap or read. What ever makes you comfortable, and make sure you keep something in your stomach, like Sharon said. I love Progresso or home made soups..
Best of luck to you, let us know how it goes.

So very sorry about your news.
I found nausea to be more manageable if I did not let my stomach get empty.  So maybe a piece of toast and tea in the morning?  Resigned myself to sleeping 16-18 hours a day on the 3rd and 4th following chemo, fog generally lifted somewhat a week after treatment.
It worked for you once, it can surely work again!
Sharon

Judy,
I am so sorry to hear this and understand what you are feeling right now. If you recieved carbo/taxol as your initial chemo then carbo/taxotere will be very similar, maybe a little easier I hope as taxotere is a sister drug to taxol.
I never eat anything before my treatments as it is too early in the morning, but I usually have a snack or even lunch will recieving my treatment. I have done this all along and never had much problem. Just try to eat fairly bland foods that day and the first few days after. I have found that anything very greasy or spicy will have a tendency to bother my stomach for awhile.
As far as exhaustion/fatigue, I really don't know what to tell you. After 3 years I have decided that it just goes along with the whole thing. Sometimes it is really bad and others times not bad at all. When it is worse, pace yourself and rest when you feel you need to.
I will keep you in my prayers that this new combo will work just as well.
