Cist Removal.

I am a 31 yr old female, having surgery for the first time in my life April 1, 2011. I am terrified. The procedure being done is the Laparoscopic Surgery, to remove a cist on my right ovary. So any feedback on the procedure would be greatly appreciated? Also, I am scared to be put to sleep? Fear of the Unknown. Thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I understand where ur coming from, I'm waiting for my operation date, am seeing the consultant on Monday, but I too am worried of being put under :-/ I would prefer to be awake so am going to ask if I can have an epidural?....
I'm not sure which kind of surgery I will have but probably won't be keyhole as my cyst is 20cm but they gotta do what they gotta do.
U will have to keep us all informed on how u are doing, take care and best wishes

I have had bother the laparoscopy and the laparotomy. The laparoscopy was my first major surgery that I remember having (had tonsils removed when i was 5, too young to remember surger) and I was nervous about being put under. but i was worried over nothing. For that surgery for me, it was a day surgery, I was discharged from the hospital i think it was about 6-8 hours after the surgery was done. Have you had your pre surgical screening done yet where you talk to the nurses and the anesthesiologist? If you havent, talk to them about the scare of being put under. my nurses were amazing in the OR and held my hand and kept talking to me til I went under. When I woke up from surgery in recovery, i did have a panic attack, but apparently that can be common and the nurses and anesthesiologist is great dealing with it because they know it can happen.

You'll have 3-4 incisions, i have 3 from it,1 in my belly button, 1 just above pubic bone, and on the left side of my tummy. They are fairly small, my doctor just sealed them with the steri strips that come off on their own in about 7 days. Your tummy will be sore, but you'll feel a lot better in the 2-4 weeks after surgery. At 2 weeks post surgery I felt good, I had gone on a short road trip 2 hours away, etc. I just had to make sure i wore looser pants in the waist, because my pants would rub the incisions.

The biggest thing I can suggest, is WALK! After surgery get up and walk to get the gasses out of your body, that is likely the most painful part of that surgery in my opinion.

And spend the next little while relaxing and try( easier said than done) not to stress yourself out over surgery! You'll wake up after and realize all that worry was for nothing. The doctor, nurses and anethesiologist are amazing, and will do everything to make this as stress free for yo as possible. This is routine for them, so they know your concerns, and no matter how many times yo need to ask questions, do it! They will ask you just as many questions over and over again too. Lol.
