Laparotomy Monday

I met with a new, much better doctor on Friday. He wanted me in surgery ASAP, so I'll be having a laparotomy at noon on Monday to remove the 18 x 11 cm cyst on my left ovary. My previous doctor had thought it was on my right AND wanted to remove it laparoscopically That could have cost me BOTH ovaries! Thank God for a second opinion. My surgeon will be doing a vertical incision, and he said I'll be in the hospital for at least 2 or 3 days. He's still confident that it's benign, but we'll know for sure when they biopsy it while I'm in surgery. If it does end up being borderline, he'll do a omentectomy and a lymphectomy in addition to removing my cyst and left ovary, and I'll be in the hospital longer. Any tips for keeping sane while I'm recovering? What can I expect after surgery? Thanks for all the help; you've been the very best!

i had a laparotomy a week ago to remove a 23 x 18 mass and spent 5 nights in the hospital...most of the time sleeping and resting.  there's not alot we could do as i was so drugged up on morphine that everytime i did try to do something, like sit up and read or eat i felt sick and dizzy.  didn't even go on facebook until the 4rth day!  so try not to take any morphine if the pain is bearable.

the stomach will feel tight afterwards and you'll walk double bent with the speed of a 90year old...well, i did anyway.  but a week onwards, i'm nearly walking straight again, albeit still slow.  it will be uncomfortable when doing simple tasks so it's good to have someone with you when you are discharged.

anyway, wishing you a speedy recovery!  xx

Sanity during recovery...movies, movies movies.  At least that helped me!!!  :)  I also read books and did puzzles.  It is important to have someone to help you with all your usual daily routines.  You shouldn't lift or vacuum or even stand to prepare meals. It helps to have frozen dinners prepared, take out menus on hand and if possible a group of friends or family who will help you out with meals for a bit.

You will be sore and the worst part is getting the bowels back to work.  Be sure to walk when they give you the go ahead and that will help.  Also, it helps to take your pain meds on a schedule during the first couple of weeks. They work better if you don't let your pain get out of control.

Wishing you a benign outcome and speedy recovery!!!
