Surgical recovery time post midline laparotomy

Hi,
I had a removal of an ovarian tumour plus ovary and tube removal. They did a midline incision about 20cm long.
I am a six weeks down the track and still have muscle pain, and still need to brace to cough/sneeze etc. I'm an ED nurse and I just don't know how you know when you're ready to go back to work. Doing things like walking etc I'm ok, but I go to bed sore each night, so I'm worried I'll get busy at work and injure myself. I'd rather be poor than injured, but I feel this pressure that people expect that I should be back at work by now.
Help! I've not had surgery before, it's all new to me being on the other side as a patient. My gp doesn't seem to have any input either

I don't recall still being sore after 6 weeks but my laparotomy was 10 years ago. I believe I was back to work by then but I had a desk job. There is a bit of healing that needs to take place internally so you certainly don't want to over-do it too soon! Hope you feel better soon!
