Scared of ovarian cysts / cancer

I am 46 years old and healthy, except for my ovarian cysts which have grown to 7-9cm. and some benign fibroids on my uterus.  My doctor wanted to do a biopsy first as no obvious traces of cancer were found in the blood, but then changed his mind and wants to do the biopsy and remove both ovaries at the same time on 3 December.  Then do the analysis for any trace of cancer.  He's told me because the cysts are so large both ovaries have to be removed.  I've had a similar problem 15 years ago and the cysts were benign.  I'm very scared and do not know if this is the right decision:  should I insist that a biopsy is made first? so that maybe the cysts may be removed without removing the ovaries as well?
I've read your forum and it's really helpful!  Pls help!

Unfortunately, the only safe way to remove those cysts is to remove the ovaries.  Are they complex (have solid parts)?  If they are complex then there is a "chance" they can be malignant.  You should ask your doctor what will be done in the rare event your frozen sections shows malignancy.  It would be good idea to have a gynecologic oncologist on call in case that is found.  That way you can have proper staging in the same surgery and will reduce your risk of spreading malignany.  You can't safely biopsy a mass if it is complex.  It needs to be removed intact.  Otherwise, you run the risk of spreading the contents into the abdomen.   In my opinion, you have no choice but to have this surgery.  Please be sure to talk to your doctor about the "what ifs" and the possibility of a gyn/onc.   Please keep us posted on how you are doing!

Well, *can* the cysts be removed without removing the ovaries?  In other words, is the doctor simply removing the ovaries because it's easier, or because he can't take off the cysts without taking the ovaries?  If the cyst can be removed and still retain the ovaries, you have every right to request that.  You might get a second opinion on this question.
