Hi
I recently had large cyst, left ovary & Fallopian tube removed via laproscopy & want to share a few tips for those who are about to or just had this kind of surgery, here goes :-
There are many different kinds shapes & sizes of cysts which affect everyone differently!
DONT go googling stuff because u will scare the hell outta urself!!!! Talk to ur gyno/doc or someone on here.
Before hospital:- PRE make meals and freeze, stock up on non perishable items, get some high fibre foods in aswell as high protein (these are good for helping stool movements) bottled water also good because u don't hav to keep getting up for fresh glass every five minutes, peppermint cordial is good for the gassy feeling u will get after op, yogurts just incase u get any infection and are put on antibiotics ( these will help reduce risk of yeast infection) stock up on magazines/puzzle books. Painkillers too!!!!
1) when u go into hospital don't be alarmed by all the surgeons/doctors etc who come and introduce themselves to u, this is normal,
2) if u don't understand something don't be afraid to ask them to explain or repeat
3) if u are nervous about surgery ask for something to calm ur nerves
4) when u come round from surgery u MIGHT have drip, oxygen on u don't be alarmed this is just to help (mine weren't removed for approximately 8 hours after surgery)
5) don't be a hero when it comes to going to the bathroom, ask the nurse to take u in a chair!
6) when u do manage to eat something be prepared for nausea or sickness but that doesn't happen to everyone! But remember to drink LOTS of water!
7) during the first night (and maybe the 2nd & 3rd) u will be up & down like a yoyo I was awake every 2 hours for a pee, DON'T be tempted to stop drinking water!!!!
8) it's pretty normal to have a slight temperature.
9) do NOT be tempted to just stop pain killers after a day or 2 because u feel Ok because this will make gaining control of the pain much harder.
don't be fooled, this is MAJOR surgery!
10) at home u may want to sleep with pillows under ur legs to help ease ur stomach & if u feel u can't make the stairs yet sleep on the sofa!
11) the gas they use during surgery will cause some degree of discomfort to ur shoulder, this is because of the pressure that it puts on ur diaphram, strange but true ( kind of like when someone has heart problems and feels it in their arm)
12) u may feel like u wanna cry for no reason at all, ur bodies hormones are all jumbled at the moment so that's normal
You may also feel hot/cold due to same thing.
13) if ur wound/incision feels burning hot or it starts to weep or has a funny odour do NOT hesitate to call it GP this could be a sign of infection!
14) When it comes to going out take ur time, walk as slowly as u need to don't feel u need to rush because this will only tire u out quicker!
A five minute walk post op will feel like uv run a marathon!!!! Take it easy slowly but surely things will get better! Having a wash will tire u out at first, be nice to urself! & be very forgiving to itself too
15) don't rush into driving because it will pull on ur stomach from all angles! If u can try not to drive for atleast 2 weeks
16) housework :-P don't stress about it!!!! Leave it until u feel betr if ur visitors come to look at ur house and not u well then they can pick up a duster or vacuum if it bothers them that much lol.
17) The pain inside may not present itself until after stitches have dissolved/been taken out so don't panic if u feel a sharp pain in the side alot of people seem to say this happens during week 2 post op ( I can vouch for that too as I'm towards end of 2nd week post op). At this point u may still be or just starting to have back pain too?
18) by week 3 the swelling shouldve started to go down if u think ur stomach is still noticeably swollen don't hesitate to call it doc as this could be infection? But might be nothing at all.
19) vaginal bleeding is also something that may or may not occur, some people experience something like a 10 day bleed while others don't bleed at all straight after surgery
While on this subject if like me u have had an ovary & a Fallopian tube removed it could take 3 or 4 months for ur body to adjust & start having periods on a "normal" basis again & yes u will start to function as normal and be able to get pregnant as long as ur remaining ovary/tube are in good condition.
20) The hospital will send ur cyst off to pathology for testing, this is run of the mill because it would be pretty irresponsible if they didn't find out exactly what it is! Ur surgeon will inform u as to how u will get the results, either via phone, letter or doctors appointment, some people get their results there and then while others have waited 3 or 4 weeks, the norm seems approximately 2 weeks via post (UK)
remember this forum! Most people on here are going through or been through what u r experiencing so share ur thoughts & emotions & make some online friends who know what ur going through :-)
Ok I'm going to stop there :-) I can talk for England lol these are just a few of the experiences I have had during the past few weeks & just wanted to help someone who may be feeling scared or worried.
I'm off to take my antibiotics (belly button got infected, which is pretty normalish too coz it's a sweaty hot area :-/ but the tablets are kicking it into touch)
