Because traumatic events are often unable to be processed by the mind and body as other experiences are, due to their overwhelming and shocking nature, they are not integrated or digested. The trauma then takes on a life of its own and, through its continued effects, haunts the survivor and prevents normal life from continuing until the person gets help.

Successful treatment of PTSD allows the traumatic feelings and memories to become conscious and integrated – or digested – so that the symptoms are no longer needed and eventually go away. This process of integration allows the trauma to become a part of normal memory rather than something to be perpetually feared and avoided, interfering with normal life, and frozen in time. Recovery involves feeling empowered, reestablishing a connection to oneself, feelings, and other people, and finding meaning in life again. Recovery allows patients to heal so that they can resume living.

You don't say if you are in therapy or not, but a qualified psychiatrist or therapist can help you learn more about PTSD and how it is affecting your life.

Don't give up .... you may need some professional help to be able to tie the two together fully and feel the feelings to let them go.

PTSD is incurable.  Many Mental Health Associations in most cities offer specific, free groups for it.  I have had it for decades and through multiple traumas, including a life threatening one, I am finally disabled by it.  I want to answer your questions about trying to remove body memories by yourself.  The only thing I have found to be somewhat helpful and under my own control are the books and CDs of both Peter Levine and Jon Kabot-Zinn.  When I force myself (and as you probably know by now, everything we do after PTSD includes forcing ourselves to do it) to listen to the CDs, read the books and try to understand them repeatedly, I do better.  What the CDs and their brain and body exercises do is try to replace the problematic memories with new, positive neurons.  This is not a "cure" as there is no cure for this brain illness (and I don't believe there are real cures for any brain illness because they don't know enough about our brains).  However, there are things that you can do and practice to create new neural pathways.  Exercise is one.  Finding anything that creates affirmations or mind body practices that work for you.  There are a ton of them and it took me a long time to find Dr. Levine's work.  For me, he was the only trauma professional who could explain me with PTSD and guide me towards any relief.  When I force myself to practice using his CDs and Jon Kabat-Zinn's, I can find some relief and am  hopefully building new neural pathways in my brain that will someday override the trauma.  But, know that this is a long process and takes daily practice.
