Constant pain in arm

by joseph_keogh, Oct 21, 2007 05:33AM
Currently I have constant pain in my left arm .. I think I hurt it lifting weights about 6 months ago as that's as long as I have had this problem. I am told it could be anything from trapped nerves needing physio to a mild heart attack I had in my sleep! .. At its most severe, I cant grip tightly or lift anything from the elbow without quite a bit of pain. It   is not like sciatica as the pain does not surface up or down my neck, back or leg.  Besides taking paracetamol constantly and/or co-codamol I have sometimes find just applying persistent pressure to the base of my fingers (palm-side) and/or finger massage my upper forearm works to ease the pain.  It would be great if anyone else has an idea how this can be treated. I can only endeavour to perservere ..

Do you have swelling, shiny skin, skin color changes, hair growth changes, or excessive sweating? If so, you might have Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, also known as Reflex Sympathetic Pain Syndrome (CRPS / RSDS).

I don't know what those drugs are you listed but have you tried plaquenil. My understanding per my mother-in-law it is for lupus patients and used for anti-inflammitory purposes. My mother-in-law had same exact problem, and they put her on that and she has not had a problem since. It took some time to work through her system but well worth it, she said. Good Luck!!!

My wife has what sounds like the same problem you are having, but my wife's pain started from extending her arm behind her and typing.  It happened over time but the doc's diagnosed her with Nerve Impingement in her rotator cuff (excuse me if I misspelled anything).  She will be having surgery to correct this, but from what we have been told it will be a long recovery after surgery.  Did you have an MRI?

Thanks all for your comments, I think the nerve impingement looks favourite as all the signs are it is nerve related. I am booking physio to see if this might resolve.
