Dentist prescribes med and I go to PM

I go to pain management dr. for conic back pain and I went to the dentist a few weeks ago to have a tooth pulled and he gave me a script for Norco, my question is will my pm dr. drop me for having this filled? I called and told the Dr's receptionist yesterday trying to be upfront and honest but she said she had to send the dr a note and would get back with me, but she has still not contacted my, I am just concerned that I have really messed up.

Phil has provided you correct and a good answer. PMPs dismiss patients for obtaining any opiate script from another provider.

Before we see a dentist or a similar practitioner we should remember to contact our PMP.  They are "in charge" of all the opiates we can ingest. All of us should have a discussion with our PMP on what to do if we are in that situation.

Another concern is what if we need emergency care for a very acute new pain producing issue? According to most contracts you are not allowed to take opiates given by a physician in any form in any situation.

Most PMPs will work with an emergency situation - but not all will so please have that discussion before such a situation arises -. and attempt to get his/her approval in writing.

Please let us know how this turns out for you. We all learn from one another.

Good Luck to You,
~Tuck

This kind of thing was never an issue until recently, and is destroying doctor/patient relationships in pain management everywhere in the country.

If you have a signed treatment agreement that states you will acquire your pain medication from one and only one doctor, then you're in violation of that agreement.

I've seen too many patients dismissed from a practice on the first violation of a treatment agreement.

Your doctor should talk with you -- be completely open and honest. Anyone can make a mistake -- even pain patients.

If you are dismissed from the practice ask for a referral to another practice. Ask for help from weaning off your pain medicine.

Best wishes.
