Mild knee pain

I have a mild disability and walk with my left knee slightly bent, as a result my kneecap has ridden up slightly and is slightly inwards.  I have had pains in it since I was young that tend to come and go, but at the moment it is bothering me more so than usual.  It hurts just underneath my kneecap slightly to the left, also swollen, and a little in the kneecap itself.  The thing is, the pain isn't constant and doesn't always prevent me from doing things.  It hurts and stiffens up whilst going downstairs, walking down inclined ground or walking for a period of time.  I don't know whether it is worth getting it checked out or not because the pain is only dull, just quite frustrating.

I am sorry you are hurting and that you have had to deal with a disability for some time. I agree you should see a physician. You should have your knee worked up. Maybe after all this time of being forced to ambulate in an unusual manner you have caused damaged to the part that can be remedied.

There also may be devices that will aid in your ambulation or the position of your knee that could help ease the discomfort.

I wish you the best. Please keep us posted on your progress. Take care, Tuck

Hi, you should definitely get it checked out. The swelling could be fluid and can be drained and your knee will be less painful. My husband has the same problem and I always wrap his with an ace bandage when it gives him trouble and he also has a knee brace he wears when it hurts him or becomes swollen. He will not go to the Dr and I keep it pretty much down from swelling with the brace and ace bandage and he takes Advil for swelling and pain. He does not have pain all the time like you. I would suggest you see a Dr and have x rays done because there may be a treatment to end the pain and ultimately treat the problem once and for all. Good luck!
