Why you so afraid of getting the nerve block? It may stop your pain. I know if I was suffering in pain I would try anything they wanted me to do.
Sooner or later you are going to have to get it done. You can go from PM Dr to PM Dr and they are going to see in your file that you refused the nerve block. Like Namnnam46 said you are going to have to get his done so that they will treat you. I doubt you'll get narcotics anymore from your PCP either untill you do the nerve block.
Good Luck
Jessica
Once again, Sherry is right on the money. While the rest of us are busy condemning your doctor and commiserating with you, Sherry addresses the problem as it is and offers a viable solution. Listen to her. She's right.
Hun,
Since you seem to be locked into this right now I'm going to approach my advice from a different angle. So here goes----
I know how scary this is right now but you said that you wanted to give the block a try. An I think that you are right on that because if you don't you will never know if it will work or not. Even if it doesn't work I can't imagine that it would be much worse than what you are experiencing right now. I'm praying that the block will work and you will have a great reduction in your pain. If it doesn't give you the relief that you hope for THEN you can go find another Dr. as you will have fulfilled what this Dr. wanted to do and ALL of the others have wanted to do to give you relief.
Now if you don't want to do this then your ONLY option will be to get another Dr. and that will take time as you will need to get another PCP (unless yours will find you another PM Dr. after the block is done) so that they can refer you to another PM Dr. Now if you don'tdo the block be prepared that that will probably be the treatment that the NEXT PM Dr. will ALSO want to do. You may wind up that you will have to do this to get anyone to help you. I don't know it just seems that is along the lines that they are all thinking when it comes to treatment.
You need to make some REALLY major decisions and QUICKLY. I'm so sorry that you have been put in this position. I'm just hoping and praying that something REALLY good will come out of this for you!!!
Please know how much we love you and are worried about you my Dear...Sherry
PS YOU know that I'm here for you ALWAYS!!! (Again I sure wish that you guys lived down here!!!!!
Sarajmt is right. If I had a dollar for every jerk that told me herniated discs don't cause pain. Educated idiot is right. I've seen so many shot-jockeys who only want to do what makes them 1000s of dollars, even if it's not right for you.
I hope you get to a new PCP and get the relief you need soon.
I forgot to add that I'm praying that you can find the care you deserve and need. Take care and please don't give up.
Wow, unbelieveable! You need to find yourself another PCP. This is just absurd! Honey, there is someone out there that can help you. I know this is so frusterating, and you don't deserve this. There are compassionate doctors out there. Look on ratemds.com to see if you can find someone on there for pain management in your area. If you need a referral, find another PCP. Call the clinic or another clinic, talk to the nurse and tell them your situation and ask for the best person to see for a PCP(I've done this). Then use them to get a referral for a PM doc if you need it. My insurance does not require referrals and I make all my appointments myself, maybe yours is the same? You can't give up! Please talk to us whenever you need to! We are here for you.
Oh Jamie, I don't even know what to say. How can this person call himself a pain management doctor is he won't even acknowledge your pain?? I'm dumbfounded!!
I do understand how you feel. Ask adhesion patients how many times we've been told it's in our heads. I wish I had a dollar for every doctor that has said adhesions don't cause pain. So I do know your deflation.
Being in untreated pain can cause depression. Why would he think it's the other way around? It just goes from bad to worse. He thinks you want this? The man is an educated idiot.
I do encourage not to give up. Find another doctor even if you need to go out of town. Whatever it takes at this point. I am so sorry. This is awful.
My PCP called back, she said since the pain dr is taking over my care I have to do what he says. Oh man my life will be going down the toilet really soon.
Jamie
I have been dealing with this pain for 1 year and 6 months. Thank you Sherry! I can't wait to hear what my PCP says. I guess it is all up to her what I do next. Cause I haven't had any luck finding a good dr other then her.
Jamie
I'm so glad that you are calling your PCP!! She needs to know what he said. She knows that your pain isn't in your head!!
I think the reason that your PM Dr. said you are depressed is because HE'S the one that depressed you!!! What you have been going thru for the past, what is it 2 or 3 mo. now, would depress ANYONE of us!!! I couldn't have held it together like you have at all and I'm not sure many of us could have. You are incredibly strong and I'm so VERY proud of you!!!
Let us know what your PCP says....(((HUGS!!)))...Sherry
Yep it didn't take him long to jump on the nerve block either and didn't even ask me if it was ok he just said it was going to be done.
What I really don't understand is how when I am sleeping and having a good dream and the next thing I know I feel like someone hit me in the face and I am trying to see why I am in so much pain and then I wake up and know It wasn't a dream I was just feeling the pain in my dream. How could this be in my head when I am dreaming about pain? I don't get it at all. Pain is the last thing from my mind while i am dreaming. I just called and left a message for my PCP they might not even call back til Monday so I will wait for them to call back to see what can be done and what I can do next.
Jamie
I was told I was too young too for my spinal cord injury and I'm 35. That was his excuse for under treating my pain. I suffered 1.5 years through heck thinking the same as you. I've learned my lesson and wish I could take it back and do it different. No, your not too young for pain medication. You really need to find yourself a new pain doctor. You are not doctor shopping or just looking for pain meds when you look for a new doctor. Quite frankly, this pm doc belittled you by telling you it's all in your head and that you are depressed. You do not need to be treated this way. There are a lot of pain mangement doctors who will prescribe injection after injection due to making more money off of it.
I think if you explain to your PCP what you just said about not seeking pain meds, but you know they're the only thing that works for your pain, they will probably understand and be happy to refer you to a doctor that will understand.
I'm so sorry you're having to go through this.
The methodone was giving to me to get me off the hydrocodone he said I am taking to many a day and need to be off pain meds all together. I am suppose to start the methodone on my birthday, next friday.
I really don't want to see this dr but I also don't want my PCP to think i am only looking for meds when this is not the case. I know pain meds are the only thing that works on my pain and me being off them are not a good thing cause the pain will be bad. This pain don't care how old I am, I am 33 and I am to young? Then tell my pain to go away so I don't have to worry about any of this. I guess I will my PCP and see what they say cause I really don't know what to do. I felt like I have been hit in the face once again.
Thanks everyone
Jamie
Oh Jamie, that is so ridiculous. I agree with everyone. You need to get away from that pain specialist. Your pain is definitely not in your head, and yes most of us do have some depression because of being chronically ill, but it does not excuse his bad behavior towards you. I'm sorry but what a jerk he was to you. I hope you will consider finding another doctor. I"ve never taken methodone, but I have heard that it does work for pain, but was he giving it to you to get off the other pain meds? We all want the best for you, and it's just so sad the loops you've had to go through.
Oh honey, I'm so very sorry. I went through something very simular to this and my best advice is to get out of there and see someone else. In the mean time, go to your PCP and get the pain meds through them. If your PCP doesn't give you meds, find someone else. The pain medicine is the ONLY medicine which takes the edge off of my nerve pain. This is completely unfair and you need to be treated much better then this. I would not go back to this doctor. There are good pain management doctors out there. It took me 1.5 years of pure heck to figure that one out. I was not treated for my pain either and was getting injection after injection.
What ever you do, do NOT give up!!! Please make an appointment with your PCP and find another pain management doctor. You are the one paying him for his services and he is not doing his job well. There is no way you are too young to be treated fairly to take pain medication as a treatment. How horrible.
I wanted to add, that ALL of us are depressed to some degree it's VERY normal and I would say that ESPECIALLY today that you are VERY depressed bcause of your appt.
I'm here Hun......(((HUGS!!!)))...Sherry
My Dear,
I am TOTALLY at a loss for words!! I truly don't no what to tell you. I don't know where else to go except to get another referral from your PCP and tell her everything that was said at the appt.
I havae to tell you that I an sitting here with TEARS streaming down my face bacause of what you have told us!! Jamie YOU DON'T DESERVE THIS!! Please call and make an appt. to go in to your PCP today if possible and see what she says and see if you can get a referral to another PM Clinic if this treatment doesn't work.
I'm with you my Sweet Girl just as we ALL are!!!...Sherry
Anyway, bottom line. I agree with everyone else that you need to call the PCP and get a new doctor. Heck, you may even be able to call age discrimination, however I know it's not good to accuse doctors of anything as we all have to stay on the tight rope.
I was also prescribed Trileptal partly for pain by a psychiatrist. I will admit that it helped the pain a little, however it's not it's primary function, like many of the meds dispensed are not prescribed for their primary function. If you have trouble with it, message me and I will tell you more about that whole thing.
Please know that we all care a great deal about you and are all shocked, dismayed, I'm downright pissed, and disappointed that they did this to you. I know how much easier it is to give up, I've done it a few times myself, but we have to keep going for our children and loved ones. One day we will be better and able to do the things we want to do. It just takes running through a gauntlet of doctors, pain meds, treatments, etc. to get there. Hang in there, dear! We're hanging on to you, too!
