I am sure all you said is true, especially for you. Some ppl do not have a choice and pain medications help us live as close to normal life as possible. Without them many of us would not even be able to get out of bed.
Methadone withdrawal I am told is thee-ee worst. I have no doubt that is a very true statement and that is the exact reason I tried almost everything else before I agreed to take meth. I am allergic to four, yes 4 pain major opiate medications and therefore my choices are limited. And my pain is so severe I would rather be dead than live with untreated, uncontrolled pain. I am happy for the people who have the choice to tolerate the pain or take opiates. I tried that for 15 years. I wish I had a reasonable choice.
We appreciate all opinions so please don't think I am criticizing you. And I am very happy you are able to function without opiates. You also bring up a very good point about making an educated decision before you agree to take any opiate. I beleive you should be well informed before you take medication. Take Care and Best Wishes, Tuck
Why Methadone? Have you tried other opiates? After 25 years of constant pain and 4 dependencies on opiates (hydrocodone twice, oxycontin, mathadone) I am taking nothing and like it better. Yes my pain is there but it was with meds also, and I'm not addicted to anything. Methadone is the hardest opiate to stop, other meds take 4 to 5 days to withdrawl, methadone takes 4 to 5 weeks to withdrawl. I'm speaking about withdrawl because it is a major factor when choosing a medication for pain. Always remember that you might get better or can't live with the side effects, and want off of meds. The side effects of methadone is much greater than other meds, you will have severe constapation that requires meds, possible urine retention, and sexual side effects. Methadone was the worst medicine I ever took!
Good luck
You might also try Googling "Methadone Clinics" or ask your Clinic for more information on where you might obtain more information on Methadone for pain relief.
You can Google pain management Dr's in your area also you can try raceagainstpain.com and the national pain society has a list of PM Dr's too. Here is a few other suggestions as well.
