11 more days

This has been so much harder then what I thought it would be. The 20th can't come fast enough so I could see the pain dr. I am starting to eat the less that I can get away with again cause of the pain. I can't get any ideas from  my PCP on how to control this pain. The only thing I get is "wait til your pain drs appt" well geeze that helps me so much. I don't know what else to do. I was really thinking about calling the dentist that caused this in the first place but then I thought better of it then I thought well I have the 2nd dentists cell phone I should call him and let him know how bad I am doing right now and I thought nope can't do that either. We was really close when he was working on me, my father inlaw would joke around and say he was my boyfriend so everytime I went to the dentist the kids said I was going to my boyfriends lol I didn't mind it cause my hubby knows he is the only one for me. He was a good guy and we talked alot that is why I reallly don't want to sue him. Cause he did do the best he knew how so the hole would close but what he was doing would never work. Sorry just trying to get my mind off the pain. Any ideas on how to control mouth and face pain would be great, no OTC stuff is working for me. I just wish I could get into see the dr sooner but he dont come back from vacation til the 20th.
Thanks for listening

Jamie, every time I read one of your posts I am stunned all over again.  I can understand your new pain doctor's office not wanting to treat you since they've never seen you and don't know anything about you.

BUT the primary care and the dentists are different stories.  I cannot for the life of me understand why your primary care doctor cannot give you some pain meds until you see this new doctor.  I really feel it's bad medicine.  I would be so angry at my PCP if they didn't "fill in the blanks" so to speak if I couldn't see my pain management team or if there were some other problem that cropped up.  I look at my PCP as my first line of defense in everything.  She's notified of every other appointment I go to, surgeries I've had, etc.  She's the one who really knows me best.  So for her to ignore that I was in agony would not sit well with me, and I would probably end up looking for a new PCP.

As far as those dentists, well, at the least they should prescribe you something to get you through this period.  Though I imagine they may be reluctant to deal with you for fear you will sue them.  (Which of course you probably should, given what I've read.)

I can only relate to times I've had mouth pain due to having root canals or a tooth pulled.  In those cases, I would lie down with 800 mg. advil (and usually percocet) with an ice pack or a heating pad, depending on what felt best to me.  On occasion I've been known to use some Anbesol.

Your mouth pain, though, is so extreme, I don't know what will take the edge off.

Have you tried any meditation or thought about accupuncture?  I'll be looking into accupuncture myself; I hear it can be a big help with pain.

As far as eating and drinking, I am sure that's the last thing you want to do, but you have to try.  Getting dehydrated and malnourished will only add to your problems.  Try eating soft foods at room temperature.  I think things either too hot or too cold could end up setting your pain off.  Pudding, scrambled eggs, Ensure drinks, yogurt, pancakes, maybe you could get those down.

I feel really bad for you and wish your doctor would come back early.

Some of your back and leg pain may be from your body withdrawling from your pain medications.  It is a classic symptom of withdrawl from opiates.  Hot baths and heating pads are just about all you can do to get by.  I'm not sure what type of medications your were taking but this could be a reason for the back and leg pain.  I'm so sorry you are going through this and wish you peace and strength until you can see your PM doctor...Deb

If he don't treat me on my appt I will have a heart attack right there on the spot. That is my biggest fear right now.
I am in so much pain. Not only is my face hurting but my back and left leg is hurting very bad and I don't know why. I know there is no way I will sleep tonight cause of the pain and I have nothing to take for it, no OTC works on me and I have tried it. I don't remember doing anything to my back or leg but it is only my back and left leg. It just started hurting out of the blue tonight.
I have to get up at 730 and be at the ball field by 9am. I don't know what I am going to do.
Thanks alot
Jamie

Yes, you will make it! I agree that that would be great if you could find a new PCP. I have never heard of anyone being treated the way you have been treated. Doctors should be compassionate and understanding.

Jamie - did you ever contact your sister in law who is a nurse? Was she able to help? Has she ad any suggestions to help the pain?

What about your friend who was going to try and get you in to see her PCP. Sounds like you need a new PCP, too.

Wishing you well.. Pain stinks.

Jamie,

I'm so sorry that you're going through all of this. The disks in my jaw (both) are displaced and I am currently "locked" as per the doctor that I recently went to (at a major university). I do understand mouth pain, and I have periods where I can't eat and during those times I drink milkshakes. I also have severe flare ups, but your pain sounds far worse than what I go though.

Do you know that this doctor will definitely treat you for this condition with the medication that you need? Has he treated you for chronic pain before? It sounds like you have a great relationship with him.

Do you think that he'll have any ideas for long term pain management? Is there anything else that they can do to help you get out of pain?

Eleven days is a long time to be in severe pain, but you have gotten through so much already--all while caring for your family! You are a strong woman. Can you try to put some soft ice on your jaw or some heat? I heat up wet wash rags in the microwave to put on my jaw--but you have to be really careful because they get burning hot very fast.
