Seeking podiatrist help. Horrible (quick) pain under my foot...

First off, I am unsure whether I posted in the proper area. I initially wanted to post under ask a doctor, but I couldn't find anything having to do with foot pain (I.E.: Podiatrist).. so apologizes if this isn't the right place.

Anyway my name is Mandi, and I am 25 years of age. I am seeking an answer or possible answer as to what is wrong with my feet and if there are any suggestions as to anything I can do to decrease the pain and how often it occurs. I will start of by stating that I do have Morton's toe (second toe longer than the big toe), I feel as though I need to mention this because I feel like it may have a significance.

It all started off one day about a year and a half ago, I woke up and my foot was a bit numb, it felt as though your foot feels after it has been asleep and when it is in the middle of regaining the sensation of waking up and tingly... It stayed like that all day and I thought it was weird but I didn't think too much of it because I thought maybe I just slept on it abnormally or something. Needless to say a few days later I wake up, take a step and every singe step I take hurts in a manner that when I was walking I had a slight limp.. the pain continued and I hated it because I am a frequent jogger (3 times a week normally for an hour for about the last four or so years of my life).

I did end up going to see a podiatrist about a month later.. I had to wait due to my at the time medical coverage situation. The podiatrist ends up watching me run, she says I am stiff when I run (or that I have no flexibility) and tells me to get orthopedic shoe inserts... which I did do and it eventually resolved the problem within a few weeks. I was SO GRATEFUL.

However now (and the pain isn't nearly as bad as it was at that point), but, now I have recently encountered this quick shooting pain (and it isn't all the time but recently it's been occurring maybe every other day once or a few times).... Usually it last for like a half minute, but sometimes it can be longer and happen a few times in a row.

THE PAIN: It mainly occurs when I have socks or stalkings, sometimes shoes on... This pain forces me to quickly remove whatever I have on my foot so that my toes can spread apart. It is a quick pain but it hurts soooo bad and it is quite unbearable to the point where I always find myself reaching for my foot to rub it and flex it in a manner that will lessen the pain until it passes. The best way I can describe it is that at the bottom of my third and fourth toe there is a shooting sensation and I have to flex my foot (toward my body) so that the pain dims down. Sometimes my second toe (next to my big toe) will extend and become longer than normal. I've noticed that it continues to hurt when I have my foot straight...so if it occurs when I am in bed or lying down, I can't keep my leg and foot straight out I have to put my foot in the position as though I were walking (flex it back toward my body). This happened the other evening and it was frustrating because I was trying to sleep... and obviously it is difficult to sleep if you have to have your foot flexed toward your body. It also continued and woke me up after I had fallen back asleep. It is so that I have to move my foot around in a position so that the pain lessens and passes. It is just so aggravating because the pain hurts soooo bad when it occurs, and it usually happens when I have socks on which is unfortunate because I've always been one to wear socks more often than not.

At this point in time I don't have medical coverage so I am just desperately seeking any advice on to what I can perhaps do to decrease the amount of times this pain occurs. I have a pretty high pain tolerance and I just find this pain to hurt really bad when it does occur.

Also I have noticed that it occurs more frequently in my left foot and that it is just one foot at a time when it does happen. In both feet my second toe is longer than the first big toe, however my left foot second toe isn't as straight out as the right... In other words my left foot second toe curls in a bit at the tip rather than being fully extended like my second toe in my right foot (which is). My right foot second toe seems to be more stretch out (and straight, so it looks a bit longer).. which I find kind of significant since the pain occurs a lot more often in left foot, which is why I think the fact that I have morton's toe MAY have something to do with the pain... and I'm basically trying to give any details that I think may help someone to determine what is wrong with my feet. Any help or suggestions would be extremely appreciated... Thanks in advance!

Update: today I moved my foot while sitting down eating and it happened, horrible pain.. I noticed that my toe spread apart (more away than usual) from the rest of my toes. I had to bend my foot back (toward my body) to lessen the pain.. and the pain seemed to be right under my big toe underneath my foot mainly.

Thank you for your help! I really appreciate it... Actually just yesterday I encountered that pain worse than I probably ever have in my right foot.. I was getting ready to go out and I had these knee highs on (which I probably shouldn't have been wearing because they are tight in the foot area and I know my toes probably didn't have enough room in them) anyway, I had them on for maybe a half hour and right before I was ready to leave I felt the pain, so I quickly took my knee high off and my foot just starting hurting so bad... I sat down right away and tried to look at my foot and toes to see their physical reaction. This time the pain probably lasted for about 4-5 minutes which is longer than usual. But this time I noticed something different.. at first I noticed my third and fourth toes spreading apart from each other (mind you I had no control over my toes, I couldn't move them if I wanted to.. I could just flex my foot to try to ease the pain by rubbing/clinching it)... After the third and fourth toe had spread apart from each other, they went back to normal and it seemed to jump to the next two toes, meaning after that my second and third toe spread apart from each other (a larger gap than usual) and then the gap jumped to my big toe and second toe, meaning those two toes spread apart from each other while the other toes went back to how they are normally. It was like a gap in between each two toes that moved along between the toes until it got to my big toe and second toe lastly.. Mind you I had no power of moving the two toes it occurred in. I wouldn't have been able close the gap in between the toes if I wanted to.

I definitely won't be wearing those knee highs again or chancing it. It's not worth it, I feel so helpless when this pain hits. I actually didn't leave after, I just stayed home in fear that the pain would hit again while driving.. which would have been BAD since it was the foot that I use to push down the gas pedal and break.

Anyway, thank you for reminding me that my orthopedic shoe inserts may have suffered a lot of wear and misalignment. That very well may be the case because I've had them for over a year now so I will definitely look into getting a replacement pair.

Hi!
I am sorry to hear about your pain. One possibility is that the orthopedic shoe inserts have either suffered wear and tear or a misalignment and are now not as effective as before. The other possibility is that you have a pinched nerve. Plantar fasciitis and arthritis of small joints of foot are also some local causes that need to be ruled out.
Until you can consult a doctor, dip your feet in warm water at the end of your day. Soak for 10-15 minutes. Massage the feet and the legs with a massage cream or oil. You could even rub in a pain killer gel. Hope this helps.Take care!
