Thumb gets stuck then Pain

This is not the first time but when i do the dishes *don't so them too often* usually the big plates and cutting boards as i hold them, with my thumb resting in the back for support, my thumb gets stuck. I can feel it like its stuck and wont bend but when i place the plate down my thumb gives me a sharp pain that runs from the joint making the way down my hand.
it has done it at least 7 times this yr and it usually hurts for a while then it subsides. any idea why it does that or at least what should i do.

It sounds like a joint problem to me. Have it x-rayed if you're concerned. I wouldn't worry to much though.
