WEIRD REACTION TO THE EPIDUARL
Anyone ever get a rash from having an epidural? I woke up today and my face and both of my arms look as though I've been in the sun. It definitely looks weird. Doesn't really hurt, just looks funny. Anyone know how long it will last?
I had one on Friday and I've been getting hot flashes and my face and neck are red. They told me it was normal, but they didn't say when it would go away.
I had a reaction... it was horrible... I couldn't sit still, I would lay down, sit up, toss and turn... always moving something whether it be my leg, or hands or anything.... I was flipping around like a fish... or I felt like it. The injection site was raised and it hurt! After talking to the doctor he said I had a reaction to the steroid that he used. It was crazy... I do not remember most of it... I was so embarrassed.... Never again! Hope you are feeling better!

The steroid in the injection often causes the symptoms you are describing. I have similar symptoms when I take steroids in any form.

I've noticed that I've been having flashes, feel very hot, and haven't been able to sleep. I got the shot on Friday so it should start to calm down, I'm hoping. The redness doesnt look like hives, I'm just red. The best way to describe it is when you go out in the sun without sunscreen and burn. I'm glad to hear from you Running mom, so I know I'm not the only one who has had this reaction.
Yes, I get that every time they inject steroids! I will have the sunburn rash and hot flashes, it feels like I've been in the sun for hours. I also sweat and feel like crap, I usually don't get off of the couch for 3 days after an injection. The first pain doctor didn't care about my reaction to the steroids and said it was normal. I'm extremely sensitive to steroids.
That's a good thought. Actually I was wondering if something else could account for your redness and rash.
Is your rash small red wheals or is it more hive-like? Both can appear as the result of a reaction but obviously hives can be more concerning and signify allergic reaction.
I'll be interested to hear what your physician's thoughts are on the rash.

The epidural is for my degenerating discs in my neck and a herniation. Thanks for your information, I'm kind of wondering if it is the medication change. The doctor just put me on Norflex 100 mg xr twice a day, I've taken it before but not in this dose. And now I have the weird redness. So, I'm not sure if it's from the epidural or the medication, but I think if it's still there on Tuesday, I'll leave a message for my doctor.

I'm definitely going to call the doctor on Tuesday to let him know. I've had the red in the face before, but never on my arms. It really looks strange, I have to tell you. Great idea about the photo, I'm seeing him a week from Monday so I'll show him what it looks like with my camera phone. The epidural seems to have worked ok, I can turn my neck! Anytime I can turn my neck is a good day. I normally walk around with a tilt and can't move it around, so the shot has worked. I'll be very sad if they take that away from me. I also carry an EPI pen as I have many allergies, but it doesn't hurt so that's a good thing.
I never even thought of that Sherry but I agree to take a picture of it so you can show the dr. I would also be worried about what is going on Under the skin. When my son has a allgeric reaction to something he gets a rash, a big red one. I remember once a sweat bee bit him on the neck and it swollen up so bad and he got a rash, if a sweat bee can do that I am so scared of what a bee can do to him.
If it is bugging you I would get some benadryl I am not a doctor but just some advice, That is what I gave my son when he has a allergic reaction to something, I have a EPI pen also to use if it gets severe.

I'm so sorry to hear about that. I haven't ever had an epidural only the RFA and I THINK that is different isn't it? Have you called your Dr. to let them know? Since it has gone down your arms it might mean that it is more severe than before. I do know that sometimes when you have a rash on the surface INSIDE you might have and even MORE severe allergic reaction. PLEASE notify him just in case. Also, you might want to take a picture of it in case he wants to see it next week but it has gone away. That way you could show him exactly what it looked like.

I had a crazy reaction... its long story... husband is yelling for me to get in tub... promise when I get back I will post. You are not alone.
Yeah Jamie. I've had it happen to me on my face, but never down my arms. It looks like I have a fever, very strange!
i have never heard of this but I also don't get epiduarls but I know of a few people on here that does, they might be able to help you. I would call the dr that did it when they are back in from the holiday weekend just to give them a heads up that this happen and see if there is anything that can be done to keep it from happening.

When it is used to treat back pain usually they inject an analgesic and steroid into the epidural space. The steroids are also used to relieve allergic reactions and therefore is probably not the culprit that caused your redness or rash. I would be inclined to beleive that you reacted to what every else was used in the epidural.
If you have no other symptoms besides the rash I would not be overly concerned. If you develop other symptoms such as sore throat, difficultly swallowing or breathing I would seek immediate treatment at your local ER....or call 911. By all means notify your physician. Taking a photo of the rash is a good suggestion. Make sure that you get a close up so he/she can actually view the wheal (rash).
Please let us know the results of your red rash. I hope it will soon resolve and that it does not cause you any discomfort.
