I am taking methdone and hydrocodone compound for pain management. I need better pain control, does anyone have any knowledge on which one would be safer to increase before I ask my doctor. I am asking for opinions. Thank you shelby46

Hi, I too live with chronic pain(from a whip lash inj 2.5 yrs ago). I take Oxycontin and Vicodin 10's. I still have a lot of pain and am to be honest, I am fearful of upping my meds for fear of always needing more. So I live with pain and rest during the day to try to calm my pain down. I find with my meds the mornings are best and by 1pm, usually, I am on my back. CP is so hard to live with. I have family members who think I've given up on life because I "think my pain is so bad that I take meds and I should just learn to live with pain, because after all pain is part of life", well people who do not have CP have NO idea the toll it takes. I also attend a support group for CP.
I would talk to my dr and try to use rest, support groups and meditation to manage pain. I have a very high level of pain all the time and it's so surreal to me still. I am not allowed to talk about it in my family for they think I am just whining..sad...but it's so hard and I am broken hearted that my family do not let me talk about it nor do they care to be understanding. THIS IS WHY THIS BOARD is here.
I send my gentle hugs.
God bless. God is my source of strength.,
best, Vee

Hello Shelby and welcome to the Pain Forum:

You are in the right place. This forum is for people who suffer with pain and the management of it. KLM had great advise with the Fentanyl patch. It gives you around the clock pain relief. The patches have a life of 72 hrs. There is no need to get up in the morning to take that dose of pain relief. It does come with side effects that generally last for the first month and after that you won't een know you're wearing a patch. If you'd like more information please contact me.
Thanks.

Hi shelby. I think people have been slow to respond because this forum is for addicts, and not for people needing advice on pain management. However, I can understand why you posted on here....who better to ask about opiate dosage, than us junkies? LOL ,hope that didn't offend anyone....just a joke! :) Anyways, I think you should definitley talk with your doc before upping any of your meds. You might not need more of what you're on, you may just need something different. What is the source of your pain? (Chronic back pain, sciatica, previous injury, etc.) And what doseage of methadone and hydrocodone are you on? I know several people with serious pain that were on compunds similar to yours, that had better luck when they switched to Fentanyl patches for long-acting relief and something like hydrocodone, or maybe even fentanyl suckers for breakthrough pain. Best of luck to you.
